Evelyn: Give me that paper, you thieving orphan!
Lily: No! Daddy told me to keep it hidden until his lawyer arrived!
Evelyn's open palm struck across Lily's cheek with a sharp, echoing crack that silenced every whisper in the crowded ballroom.
Evelyn: Get out of my mansion, you pathetic brat!
Lily fell backward onto the cold marble, tears streaming down her stinging face as she curled over her knees.
Evelyn: Know your place in this family!
Evelyn stepped closer, driving the toe of her designer heel into the floor just inches from the sobbing child's fingers.
Lily: Daddy, please help me!
Evelyn: Cry all you want. Nobody in this room cares about a beggar's daughter.
The heavy front doors burst open with a deafening bang against the white limestone foyer walls.
Carter: Take your hands off my daughter right now!
Carter Vance stood framed in the bright afternoon daylight, his charcoal grey suit jacket unbuttoned and his eyes wild with fury.
Evelyn: Carter? How are you here? Your flight was delayed until sunrise.
Carter: I chartered an emergency helicopter the second my head of security notified me of what you scheduled today.
Carter crossed the foyer in five massive strides, dropping to his knees beside Lily and wrapping his muscular arms around her small frame.
Lily: Daddy! She took the envelope you left inside my desk drawer.
Carter: Shh, baby girl. I've got you. Nobody is ever going to touch you again.
Carter picked up the torn envelope from the marble floor and rose to his feet, his jaw set like iron.
Carter: Look at me, Evelyn.
Evelyn: Carter, honey, let's not make a scene in front of the board members and donors.
Carter: Look at this child you just struck in front of fifty respectable witnesses.
Evelyn: She was misbehaving! She broke a family heirloom and refused to show respect!
Carter: She is ten years old, Evelyn. And she is the biological daughter and sole legal heir to this entire estate!
A collective gasp ripped through the crowd of oil executives, socialites, and private bankers standing by the grand staircase.
Evelyn: That's absurd! We signed a prenuptial agreement guaranteeing me fifty percent of the residential trust upon our anniversary!
Carter: That agreement was drafted before my private investigator uncovered what you did to Lily's mother seven years ago.
Evelyn's face drained of color as she stepped backward against the carved mahogany banister.
Evelyn: Wait, sweetheart, let me explain! It wasn't what you think!
Carter stepped forward and delivered a hard, resounding slap across Evelyn's face, sending her stumbling sideways onto the marble tiles.
Evelyn: You struck me! You hit a woman in your own home!
Carter: I defended my daughter against an extortionist and an abuser under my roof.
Carter gripped Evelyn firmly by her silk-clad arm and dragged her across the slick floor toward the threshold.
Carter: You are going straight to federal prison!
Evelyn: You have no proof! My attorneys will tear your family apart in bankruptcy court!
Carter: You won't have attorneys after the FBI finishes raiding your offshore accounts in the Cayman Islands.
With a final shove, Carter cast Evelyn out past the massive threshold onto the scorching limestone steps outside.
Carter: Get out of our lives forever!
The solid mahogany door slammed shut with a heavy mechanical thud that echoed into absolute silence.
