The library smelled of polished cedar and vintage leather books, but the desk behind the mahogany partition was thoroughly ransacked.
Carter: Marcus, bring the emergency bolt cutters from the maintenance closet.
Marcus: Right here, sir. I anticipated we might need to breach the secondary compartments.
Lily pointed toward the bottom drawer of the antique French writing desk.
Lily: That's the one. She hid a gold key behind the painting of the blue horse.
Carter lifted the heavy oil painting off its brass brackets, revealing a shallow recess carved into the dry wood paneling.
Carter: Good girl, Lily. You have sharper eyes than half my corporate security team.
The key turned with a sharp metallic snap, and the bottom drawer slid out along oiled steel gliders.
Arthur: Good heavens, Carter. Look at the contents of those envelopes.
Inside the drawer lay three forged United States passports, stacks of bundled hundred-dollar bills, and a sealed court subpoena.
Carter: What is this court summons? This isn't from the Dallas district court.
Arthur: It's a probate challenge filed in Miami two weeks ago. She was preparing to declare you mentally incapacitated.
Carter: Incapacitated? On what medical grounds?
Arthur: Read the attached pharmaceutical report, Carter. She had a private physician prescribing high doses of sedative liquid under your name.
Carter felt a chill run down his spine as he remembered the peculiar herbal tea Evelyn had insisted on serving him every evening.
Carter: My headaches. The dizziness I've been having for three months. She told me it was executive burnout.
Lily: Daddy, she used to put blue drops in your teapot every night before dinner. She said it was special vitamin oil to keep you from working too hard.
Carter: My God. She was poisoning me in my own dining room.
Arthur: This moves the case from simple grand larceny and forgery to premeditated attempted murder, Carter.
Marcus stepped into the doorway, holding a secure satellite phone against his ear.
Marcus: Mr. Vance, the perimeter patrol just stopped a rental sedan trying to breach the rear service gate.
Carter: Who is driving?
Marcus: A male Caucasian in his late forties carrying Florida identification under the name David Miller.
Arthur: David Miller. That's the first husband, Carter. The one listed on the Zurich shell corporation.
Carter: Did he have a weapon?
Marcus: He had a concealed handgun and a duplicate key fob to your private aircraft hangar at Love Field.
Carter turned to his legal counsel with eyes that burned with absolute, unyielding rage.
Carter: Call the United States Attorney's office right now. Tell them I want every federal agency on Texas soil at this estate within twenty minutes.
Arthur: They're already en route, Carter. But Evelyn isn't waiting on the porch like you ordered.
Carter: Where is she?
Marcus: Security cameras show her running through the south garden toward the guest cottage where the safe deposit boxes are stored.
Carter took Lily's hand and placed it gently into the palm of the trusted family butler.
Carter: Stay right here with Mrs. Higgins, Lily. Lock the study doors from the inside.
Lily: Don't let them hurt you, Daddy.
Carter: Nobody is hurting anyone ever again, baby. This ends today.
