The Grand Foyer Chaos

Her Stepmother Called Her Worthless Until The Secret Security Cameras Answered

The tall mahogany doors shook violently as heavy footsteps echoed along the outside porch.

Evelyn sneered, taking another step forward, her pointed heels clicking aggressively against the polished stone.

Evelyn: Don't look at the door like a savior is coming. When Charles sees what happened to my heirloom pendant, he will throw you out into the street himself.

Clara: I never touched your pendant, Evelyn. You left the nursery balcony unlocked during a thunderstorm, and Lily almost fell!

Evelyn: Liar! You're making up excuses to cover your clumsy hands!

Lily: She saved me! The wind pushed the glass door open and I slipped! Clara pulled me back inside!

Evelyn: Be quiet, you ungrateful brat! Do you want your trust fund frozen until you are thirty? Because your father listens to me now!

Clara: Threatening a child over money? What kind of monster are you?

Evelyn: The kind of woman who signs your paycheck, girl. Now get off your knees and hand her over!

Evelyn reached down, grabbing Clara by the shoulder of her uniform, pulling her sharply backward.

Clara refused to break her hold on the child, bracing her knees against the stone floor, her knuckles white with strain.

Clara: Let go of me! You're hurting her arm!

Evelyn: Hand her over or I will call the sheriff right now and have you locked up for assault and burglary!

Lily: Daddy! Daddy, help us!

Evelyn: Your father is in Chicago for the board meeting! He isn't walking through that door to save you, Lily!

Suddenly, the heavy front double doors burst inward with a deafening bang that echoed up into the three-story ceiling.

Standing in the doorway was Charles Vance, his dark wool coat dripping from the rain, his tie pulled loose, and his jaw locked in raw fury.

Charles: Step back from them right now, Evelyn!

Evelyn: Charles? What... what are you doing here? Your private jet wasn't supposed to land until midnight!

Charles: Drop your hands, I said! Move away from my daughter!

Evelyn jumped back, her face instantly pale, her aggressive posture melting into practiced sweetness in less than a second.

Evelyn: Honey, thank God you're home early! This girl went completely insane! She tried to steal the sapphire necklace your mother left in the safe, and when I caught her, she grabbed Lily and threatened to hurt her!

Clara: Mr. Vance, that is not true! Please look at the terrace!

Evelyn: Don't listen to her, Charles! Look at her clothes—she's hysterical! She's been skimming money from the household account for months!

Charles: Shut up, Evelyn.

Evelyn: What did you just say to me? I'm your wife!

Charles: I told you to shut your mouth!

Charles dropped his briefcase onto the entryway bench and walked across the foyer with deliberate, heavy steps.

He knelt beside Clara, gently lifting Lily into his arms and pulling Clara up by her trembling elbow.

Lily: Daddy, my foot hurts. Evelyn pushed Clara into the table, and the glass broke.

Charles: I know, sweet girl. Daddy has you now. You're completely safe.

Clara: I'm so sorry, sir. I tried to keep her calm. I tried to keep the door shut.

Charles: Don't you dare apologize, Clara. You have nothing to be sorry for.

Evelyn crossed her arms, her red lipstick curling into a tight, indignant sneer as she tried to regain control of the room.

Evelyn: Why are you coddling the help, Charles? She is a paid employee! Fire her immediately and let's have dinner. We have the charity gala tomorrow night!

Charles: There will be no gala for you, Evelyn.

Evelyn blinked in sudden confusion, taking a cautious step back toward the bottom of the grand staircase.
