Two uniformed sheriff deputies entered through the open double doors, their heavy tactical boots clicking sharply against the wet stone.
Behind them walked Detective Reynolds, holding a manila file folder tucked under his arm.
Detective Reynolds: Mr. Vance? We received the video transmission your security director forwarded twenty minutes ago.
Charles: Good evening, Detective. The suspect is on the floor right in front of you.
Evelyn: Detective, listen to me! This is a private domestic dispute! My husband is fabricating evidence to get out of our divorce settlement!
Detective Reynolds: Ma'am, stand up and place your hands behind your back.
Evelyn: No! Do you know who my father is? He sits on the hospital board!
Deputy: Hands behind your back, ma'am. Do not resist, or we will take you to the ground.
The cold steel handcuffs clicked shut around Evelyn’s slender wrists with two sharp, metallic snaps.
She shrieked in outrage, struggling against the deputy's firm grip, her expensive silk dress tearing along the side seam.
Evelyn: Charles! Tell them to stop! You are humiliating me!
Charles: You humiliated yourself the second you endangered a child for life insurance money.
Detective Reynolds opened his folder, pulling out a printout of an electronic insurance policy application.
Detective Reynolds: Mrs. Vance, did you submit this supplemental policy request yesterday afternoon using your husband's forged electronic signature?
Clara gasped, covering her mouth as she looked up from where she was holding Lily.
Clara: A life insurance policy on Lily?
Charles: Three million dollars. Payable solely to Evelyn Vance in the event of accidental death on the property.
Lily: What does that mean, Daddy?
Charles: It means someone was very, very sick in the head, baby. But she will never touch you again.
Evelyn: It was for an educational annuity! It was an investment fund! My financial advisor told me to set it up!
Detective Reynolds: Your financial advisor gave us a signed statement fifteen minutes ago. You told him your husband approved the policy verbally. That constitutes felony insurance fraud, grand larceny, and attempted child endangerment.
Evelyn: No! Charles, please! Tell them it's a mistake!
Charles: You are going straight to federal prison, Evelyn. And before you arrive there, my legal team will file for an emergency annulment based on criminal fraud.
Evelyn: I will take everything from you! I'll tell the press! I'll destroy your company's stock price!
Charles: Go ahead. The press loves a story about a corrupt stepmother going down in handcuffs.
The deputies turned Evelyn around, marching her firmly across the grand foyer toward the open night air.
Her wild screams echoed into the rainy darkness until the back door of the cruiser slammed shut with a heavy metal thud.
Charles walked over to the front entrance, gripped both heavy wooden door handles, and slammed the double doors shut with a booming echo that permanently sealed her fate outside.
