The rain slashed harder against the French doors, rattling the leaded glass panels like gunfire.
Evelyn backed up two steps, her high heel catching the edge of the oriental rug near the bottom riser of the stairs.
Evelyn: Section fourteen was about infidelity! I have never cheated on you, Charles! Not once!
Charles: Section fourteen is the criminal misconduct clause. Any intentional act that endangers the life of my biological child immediately nullifies every single financial settlement, every property transfer, and every monthly allowance.
Evelyn: You're lying to scare me! My attorney drafted that agreement!
Charles: Your attorney took a thirty-thousand-dollar bonus from my legal team to make sure that exact clause stayed in. Did you really think I built a billion-dollar logistics firm by being an idiot?
Clara: Mr. Vance, the balcony doors upstairs... the latch was broken intentionally. I found a screwdriver on the floor by the curtains.
Evelyn: Shut your mouth, you little gutter rat!
Evelyn lunged forward suddenly, her manicured nails aimed directly at Clara’s face in a blind burst of panic.
Charles moved like lightning, stepping between them and shoving Evelyn's outstretched wrists aside with his forearm.
Charles: Don't you touch her!
The momentum spun Evelyn completely off balance. Her pointed heel snapped against the slick marble, sending her flying backward onto the floor with a loud, hollow thud.
Her designer amber dress bunched awkwardly around her knees as she sprawled on the cold stone, gasping for air.
Evelyn: Ow! You pushed me! That's domestic abuse! I will sue you for every dime you have!
Charles: The camera above the chandelier recorded the entire thing, Evelyn. You attacked my employee, lost your footing, and fell on your own greed.
Lily: Clara, are you okay?
Clara: I'm fine, Lily bug. I'm right here.
Evelyn: Charles... please. Look at me. We can fix this. We can send Clara away with a generous severance package. We can forget this night ever happened!
Charles: Clara isn't going anywhere. You are.
Evelyn: This is my home! You bought this mansion for us after our wedding!
Charles: I bought this mansion through a family trust fund established solely for Lily. Your name appears nowhere on the deed, nowhere on the mortgage, and nowhere on the municipal tax records.
Evelyn: You tricked me! You planned this from the very beginning!
Charles: No, Evelyn. I hoped you would be a loving mother to my little girl. I prayed that beneath all your vanity and expensive tastes, you had a decent heart. But you proved tonight that you are completely rotten.
Outside, red and blue emergency lights sliced through the dark driveway, illuminating the tall living room windows with vivid crimson pulses.
Evelyn looked toward the front glass, her eyes bulging with sheer horror as two police cruisers slid to a halt beside the fountain.
Evelyn: You... you called the cops? You actually called the police on your own wife?
Charles: I didn't call the local police. I called the county district attorney and the state child welfare investigators.
Evelyn scrambled to her knees, her neat hair coming loose, tears finally smearing the dark mascara down her cheeks.
Evelyn: Charles, no! Please don't let them arrest me! I have nowhere else to go! My parents won't take me back!
Charles: That sounds like an issue for your defense attorney to solve.
