Secrets in the Safe

Her Stepmother Poured the Drink But Her Secret Was Revealed

Officer Miller: Suspect is in custody. Escorting her out to the patrol unit now.

Clara: Marcus! You are making the biggest mistake of your life! My family's estate lawyers will tear you apart for this public humiliation!

Marcus: Let them try, Clara. You will never set foot inside this house again.

As the officers led the screaming woman down the front driveway toward the waiting squad car, Detective Reynolds remained in the kitchen, pulling out a notepad and looking closely at the home security system control panel mounted on the wall near the refrigerator.

Detective Reynolds: Mr. Vance, does this security system record interior camera feeds or audio logs?

Marcus: It records motion-activated video in the main hallway and living areas, but Clara asked me to disable the kitchen cameras two months ago for 'privacy'.

Detective Reynolds: Did she now? That is very interesting timing. What about private records or financial documents stored in the house?

Marcus: We have a heavy fireproof floor safe in my private home office upstairs. Only she and I have the combination key for it.

Lily: Daddy... she goes into that safe late at night when you are asleep. I saw her opening it two days ago when I went to get some water.

Marcus: She opened the safe without telling me? Lily, are you sure about that?

Lily: Yes, Daddy. She was taking out big brown folders and taking pictures of them with her phone.

Detective Reynolds: Mr. Vance, I strongly suggest we inspect the contents of that office safe immediately. If she was preparing for a sudden windfall, there might be evidence of foreign accounts or altered documents inside.

Marcus carried Lily up the sweeping grand staircase toward the master office, his heart heavy with betrayal. He placed his finger on the biometric scanner of the heavy steel safe embedded in the mahogany wall unit, entering the six-digit override code. The heavy door clicked open with a muffled mechanical thud.

Marcus: Everything looks arranged normally on the top shelf... wait. Where is my personal ledger?

Detective Reynolds: What is missing, sir?

Marcus: The original copy of my late wife's trust fund agreement for Lily. It was kept right here in this velvet folder!

Marcus reached into the back of the safe, pulling out a stack of loose papers that had been shoved underneath a collection of cash envelopes. As he flipped through the documents, his eyes locked onto a formal legal contract bearing a recent stamp from a offshore banking notary.

Marcus: What is this? This is a forged transfer request for Lily's entire inheritance trust fund!

Detective Reynolds: How much money is in that trust fund, Mr. Vance?

Marcus: Twenty-five million dollars. Left to Lily by her mother, set to unlock when she turns eighteen. Clara was attempting to name herself as the sole corporate trustee in the event of my death!

Detective Reynolds: So she wasn't just after your fifty million dollar insurance policy. She wanted total control of your daughter's entire inheritance as well.
