Uncovering the Paper Trail

Her Stepmother Sealed the Water Tank, But CCTV Revealed Everything

Carter: What are you saying, Mom? What else could she have done?

Margaret: Clara's illness... the sudden decline two months ago. You remember how fast it happened?

Carter: Clara died of heart failure. The doctors confirmed it!

Margaret: Clara was thirty years old, Carter! She was healthy until Evelyn joined your legal team as the estate planner!

Carter: Evelyn didn't even live in this house back then! She was just managing the trust documents!

Margaret: Sit down at your computer, Carter. Search the archived video server. Search everything from six months ago.

Carter quickly stood up, his jaw clenched, and walked toward his private office at the end of the hall. Margaret followed him, cradling little Leo in her arms. Carter opened his laptop, typing in his master administrative password to pull up the encrypted cloud backups of the house's surveillance system.

Carter: The server keeps continuous recordings for up to a year. If anything happened, it's saved right here.

Margaret: Go to the night before Clara was taken to the hospital. July fourteenth.

Carter: July fourteenth... okay, loading the master bedroom feed.

The screen flickered, displaying the cozy, warmly lit bedroom where Carter's late wife, Clara, had spent her final weeks resting. The video timestamp read 11:42 PM.

Carter: I was in Chicago that night on a business trip. Evelyn was staying in the guest room to help Clara with her medication while the nurses were off-shift.

Margaret: Watch the bedside table.

On the screen, the door to Clara's room opened slowly. Evelyn stepped inside, wearing a dark silk robe. She walked over to the sleeping form of Clara, looking down at her for several long seconds.

Carter: She was just checking on her...

Margaret: Keep watching!

Evelyn reached into her robe pocket and pulled out a small glass vial. She uncapped it and poured three drops into the water glass sitting on Clara's nightstand. Then, she picked up the glass, gently shook it, and placed it back down.

Carter: No... no, no, no!

Margaret: She poisoned my daughter!

Carter: Clara drank that water every night... she told me she felt dizzy every time she woke up!

Margaret: She murdered Clara to get to you! To get to your family business, your money, and this house!

Carter: I married the woman who killed my wife...

Margaret: Call Detective Reynolds right now. Tell him they need to impound every asset under her name and pull Clara's medical records for a full forensic review.

Carter: I'll do more than that. I'm calling the district attorney.

Carter grabbed his office phone, his hands shaking so violently he almost dropped the receiver. He dialed the direct cell number of Detective Reynolds, who was handling the local precinct's high-profile cases.

Detective Reynolds: Reynolds here.

Carter: Detective... this is Carter Vance. The police just took my wife into custody for child endangerment.

Detective Reynolds: I just received the call from Officer Miller, Mr. Vance. We have her in the transport unit right now.

Carter: You need to charge her with murder.

Detective Reynolds: Murder? Mr. Vance, take a deep breath. Who are you talking about?

Carter: My late wife, Clara. I have video proof from my home security server. Evelyn poisoned her water six months ago.

Detective Reynolds: Are you absolutely certain about what you're seeing, Mr. Vance?

Carter: I am watching her pour something into Clara's glass on video right now! Send a forensic team to my house immediately!

Detective Reynolds: We're turning the transport unit around and bringing her straight to central booking. Don't touch the laptop, Mr. Vance. Preserve that file.

Carter: I won't touch a single key.

Carter hung up the phone and buried his face in his hands. Margaret sat in the armchair across from him, holding the sleeping baby close.

Margaret: Justice is coming, Carter. For Clara, and for this sweet baby.

Carter: But how did she think she could get away with it? Why try to kill Leo today?

Margaret: Because of the trust fund will, Carter. The one Clara signed before she died.
