Cold Words At Dinner

Her Ungrateful Children Threw Away Her Decades Of Sacrifice

Evelyn stood near the stove, her hands shaking as she carefully plated the hot roasted chicken.

She had spent her last forty dollars buying fresh herbs and vegetables from the local neighborhood market.

She carried the heavy platter into the dining room, placing it gently at the center of the mahogany table.

Evelyn: I made your favorite meal! Remember how much you loved this gravy as a kid?

Mark glanced down at the steaming plate with a harsh scowl of annoyance across his sharp face.

Mark: We don't have time for this!

He shoved the ceramic plate away so violently that dark gravy spilled across the pristine white tablecloth.

Sarah: Mark has a dinner meeting with senior partners from the city law firm tonight.

Evelyn: But you just got here... you haven't eaten a home-cooked meal in months.

Mark: I don't care about chicken, Mom! I care about closing this property transfer today.

He stood up abruptly, pulling his leather belt tight and staring down at his elderly mother.

Sarah: Stop bothering us with these needy emotional guilt trips every single time we visit.

Evelyn: I am not trying to guilt you, Sarah. I just miss my family.

Mark: We are busy adults running a multi-million dollar business firm, not children anymore.

Evelyn reached out to touch Mark’s arm, her eyes filled with desperate, unspoken maternal love.

Evelyn: Mark, please sit down. We can talk about the estate papers after dinner.

Mark: No! You think you can bribe me with food so I forget about the lawsuit?

Evelyn: Lawsuit? What lawsuit are you talking about, son?

Sarah: If you refuse to sign the property transfer, Mark will file for court partition.

Evelyn stumbled back slightly, her heart hammering wildly against her frail, aching ribcage.

Evelyn: You would sue your own mother for this house?

Mark: You are holding back my capital investment funds! I need five hundred thousand dollars now.

Sarah: We are launching a new corporate litigation branch in the city, and we need liquidity.

Evelyn: I sacrificed my entire life, my youth, my health, just so you could go to law school!

Mark: That was your choice as a parent! You don't get to hold that over me forever.

The cold harshness in Mark's voice pierced Evelyn deeper than any physical blade ever could.

Sarah picked up her designer leather purse and adjusted her dark sunglasses with total indifference.

Sarah: Let’s go, Mark. She is clearly going to be stubborn about signing today.

Mark: You have until Friday, Mom. Otherwise, my legal team will handle this in court.

They turned their backs on her, their firm footsteps echoing loudly down the hardwood hallway.

Evelyn dropped into a wooden dining chair, clutching her chest as tears flooded her pale cheeks.
