FABLE

The Poison Spilled

My Stepmother Tried to Poison My Father for Inheritance

I threw my body forward, lunging with all the force my small frame could gather. My hands slammed into David's forearm just as the glass brushed his lower lip.

Lily: STOP! DON'T TOUCH IT!

The glass tipped violently out of his hand, flying through the air before crashing loudly onto the pristine white marble floor. The green liquid splashed everywhere, soaking the rug and scattering sharp shards of glass across the room.

David: Lily! What on earth are you doing?! You nearly cut us both with that glass!

Victoria: You foolish, reckless child! Look at the mess you just made on this expensive floor!

Victoria stepped forward rapidly, her pale face twisting into an expression of pure, unadulterated rage. Her eyes flared with dangerous anger as she stared down at me.

Victoria: SHUT YOUR MOUTH RIGHT NOW!

Lily: No! Daddy, listen to me please! She put something in your drink!

Victoria: She's out of her mind, David! She's making up ridiculous lies to turn you against me!

David: Everyone just stop and calm down! Lily, look at me. What are you talking about?

I fell to my knees right beside the puddle of green liquid, tears streaming down my face as I looked up at my father's confused face.

Lily: I saw her in the pantry, Daddy! She pulled a small bottle out of her purse and poured a clear liquid into the blender!

Victoria: That was organic supplement drops, you hysterical little brat! David, are you really going to listen to a child over your own wife?

David: Victoria, quiet for a second. Lily has never lied to me about anything like this before.

Lily: IT'S POISON! She wants you gone so she can take the mansion, the life insurance, and all the money!

David lowered himself onto the cold floor, kneeling right beside me. He wrapped his strong arms around my trembling shoulders, pulling me tightly against his chest.

David: Shh, it’s okay, Lily. I'm right here. Take a deep breath and tell me exactly what you saw.

Lily: SHE PUT THE POISON IN YOUR CUP!

David looked down at the dark green liquid seeped into the grout of the marble tiles. A strange, sharp chemical odor began to rise from the spilled mixture, filling the hallway with a bitter smell that made his eyes narrow in sudden suspicion.

David: Victoria... what is that smell?
