FABLE

A New Beginning

Pushed Down the Stairs

Six months later, the bright morning sun streamed through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the Dallas mansion. The air was filled with the warm scent of fresh coffee and blueberry pancakes.

Margaret sat at the kitchen island, wearing a floral robe. Though she still used a wooden walking cane, her face was bright and full of life.

Margaret: Lily, eat your breakfast, sweetheart, or you'll be late for school.

Lily: Grandma, look! I drew a picture of our family!

Margaret leaned over and smiled, looking at the colorful crayon drawing of three people standing outside a big brick house under a bright yellow sun.

Margaret: It's beautiful, darling. Just the three of us, right where we belong.

Brandon walked into the kitchen wearing a sharp dark suit, holding a stack of legal documents in his briefcase.

Brandon: Good morning, Mom. How's the hip feeling today?

Margaret: Much better, son. The physical therapy is doing wonders. How did the meeting with the estate lawyer go?

Brandon: Everything is finalized. The divorce is officially complete, and the judge approved the full restitution order. Her frozen assets will cover every single cent she stole from the trust fund.

Margaret: And her criminal trial?

Brandon: She took a plea bargain this morning. Fifteen years without parole for aggravated elder abuse and fraud.

Margaret: Good. Justice has been served. That dark chapter of our lives is officially closed.

Brandon reached into his pocket and pulled out a small velvet box, setting it gently on the counter in front of his mother.

Brandon: The police evidence locker finally released this yesterday.

Margaret opened the velvet box. Inside, the vintage diamond engagement ring sparkled brilliantly in the morning sunlight, completely restored and polished.

Margaret: My grandmother's ring... I thought I'd never see it again.

Brandon: It belongs to this family, Mom. Nobody can ever take what's ours again.

Margaret: You know, Brandon, when I fell down those stairs, I thought everything we built was lost. But looking at you and Lily today, I realize we're stronger than we've ever been.

Brandon: We survived because we stick together. No intruder can ever break this family apart.

Lily ran over and wrapped her small arms around Brandon's leg, looking up with a wide, bright smile.

Lily: Daddy, can we go to the park after school today?

Brandon: We sure can, baby. We can do whatever we want. Our home is finally peaceful again.
