Eleanor: Look at her run, Marcus. You’d never know she went through such a terrible thing two months ago.
Marcus: Kids are resilient, Mom. As long as they feel safe, they heal fast.
Lily was giggling loudly in the backyard, running through the lawn sprinklers with her grandmother watching her closely. The pool was now fully secured with a six-foot safety fence and a passcode lock.
Eleanor: Did Arthur finish the final paperwork?
Marcus: Yes. The divorce is officially finalized. Her name has been removed from every trust, every deed, and every bank account.
Eleanor: And the criminal appeal?
Marcus: Denied. The appellate judge took ten minutes to toss it out. She’s serving her time in Gatesville State Penitentiary.
Eleanor: Good. She earned every single day of that sentence.
Marcus: I failed as a father when I brought that woman into this house, Mom. I almost lost my daughter because I was blind.
Eleanor: You didn't fail, son. Evil wears a convincing mask sometimes. But when it mattered most, you protected your blood. You stood up for your child.
Lily: Daddy! Look! Duckie is swimming in the grass!
Marcus: I see it, sweetie! Bring Duckie over here!
Marcus knelt down as Lily ran into his arms, soaking his shirt with clean, cold water. He wrapped his arms around her tightly, kissing her forehead while the warm Texas sun shone down on his family.
Marcus: Nobody is ever going to hurt you again, baby. Daddy promises.
Eleanor: Amen to that, Marcus. Amen to that.
