The morning sun broke through the gray haze of Manhattan, illuminating the massive frosted-glass doors of Vance Maritime headquarters.
Richard stepped out of the private executive elevator, whistling softly as Chloe walked beside him carrying a silver travel mug.
Richard: Did the courier deliver the revised settlement agreement to Sarah's temporary hotel?
Chloe: He dropped it off at seven-thirty. She hasn't replied, but she really has no choice.
Richard: By the end of the week, this entire messy divorce will be handled quietly out of court.
Chloe: And then we can finally announce our engagement at the spring charity gala.
Richard: First, let's wrap up this routine board meeting. It shouldn't take more than fifteen minutes.
Richard pushed open the heavy oak double doors of the boardroom and froze in his tracks.
Every single seat at the twenty-foot conference table was occupied, and sitting directly at the head of the table was Sarah, flanked by three senior corporate litigators.
Richard: Sarah? What the hell do you think you’re doing in my seat?
Sarah: Good morning, Richard. You're four minutes late for the extraordinary shareholder assembly.
Richard: Security! Get security up here right now! Who allowed this woman past the front lobby?
Arthur: Sit down, nephew, before you embarrass yourself in front of our primary institutional investors.
Richard: Arthur? What kind of ridiculous circus are you running here? Sarah has no standing in this company!
Sarah: Look at the screen behind me, Richard.
The massive presentation monitor lit up, displaying high-resolution scans of the nineteen ninety-nine charter and trust covenant.
Richard: That document is expired junk! My prenup overrides all prior agreements!
Arthur: A standard prenuptial agreement cannot legally supersede an independent irrevocable trust created prior to the marriage.
Richard: You're lying! I control seventy percent of the operating shares!
Sarah: You controlled seventy percent of the shares as a managing beneficiary, Richard. Not as the beneficial owner.
Richard: That's complete nonsense! Marcus, tell them! You’re the chief financial officer!
Marcus: I reviewed the audit this morning, Richard. The trust terms are clear, and your unauthorized bonuses violate section four.
Richard: You turned against me overnight? After everything I paid you?
Marcus: You paid me with corporate capital that legally belonged to the estate trust. I won't face criminal liability for your mistakes.
Chloe: Richard, darling, what is he talking about? You said you owned everything outright!
Sarah: Chloe, please be quiet while the adults are speaking.
Chloe: Excuse me? You can't speak to me like that! I am the incoming vice president!
Arthur: Miss Davis, your appointment was never officially ratified by the voting members of this board.
Sarah: And your corporate credit card, company vehicle, and access credentials have already been revoked.
Richard: You can't fire my staff without my written authorization!
Sarah: I'm not just firing your staff, Richard. I'm removing you as chief executive officer, effective immediately.
