Walking Into Fresh Light

The Brass Holder Left On The Couch

Grandfather: What was that loud crashing sound down here?

The elder Vance stepped into the hallway, his eyebrows furrowed as he looked between Ethan and Maya. Maya paused near the front door, looking back at the old man one last time.

Ethan: She just threw a brass piece onto the couch!

Grandfather: Is this true, Maya? Explain yourself this instant!

Maya: I am resigning effective immediately, Mr. Vance.

Grandfather: You cannot resign without giving proper two weeks notice!

Maya: I just did, sir. My final work day ends right now.

The old man stood frozen in disbelief as Maya turned the brass handle of the heavy front door. The white front door swung open wide, letting in the warm, ultra-bright afternoon sunlight.

Maya: It is finally over.

Ethan: Maya, wait a second!

Maya: Do not follow me outside.

She stepped across the threshold onto the stone porch, leaving the dark hallway behind her forever. The fresh autumn air filled her lungs as she walked down the front steps.

Grandfather: You will regret leaving this position, young lady!

Maya didn't turn back or slow her stride for even a single second. She walked down the paved driveway toward the quiet residential street, feeling the bright sun warm her face.

Behind her, the front door of the mansion remained wide open under the afternoon light. The house that had felt like a prison for six months was now just a distant building in her rearview mirror.

Maya: I am free now.

She took out her mobile phone and dialed her mother's number as she walked along the sidewalk. Her voice was steady, filled with relief and newfound confidence.

Maya: Hey Mom, I am coming home early today.

She smiled as she walked further away, knowing that a fresh chapter of her life had officially begun in the clear daylight.
