FABLE

The Broken Ring and the Forgotten Vow

The dressing room smelled of hairspray and expensive roses, but inside, the air was suffocating. Sarah stood frozen in her pristine white bridal gown, her hands trembling as she held the buzzing electric hair clipper. Tears blurred her vision, spilling over her flushed cheeks as she stared at the small child sitting on the stool before her.

Little Emily, no older than six, was sobbing uncontrollably, her small body shaking inside her white flower-girl dress. Clumps of soft hair were scattered across the polished hardwood floor like fallen leaves.

Sarah: Don't worry, honey. It's going to be okay. I trim my dog's fur regularly, I know what I'm doing!

Emily: I want my mommy! I don't want my hair gone!

Sarah: Sweetheart, please, stop moving! We only have twenty minutes before the ceremony!

Before Sarah could turn off the buzzing clipper, the heavy oak door flew open with a bang. Mark stood on the threshold, his dark navy groom suit immaculate, but his face twisted in utter disbelief and fury. He took one step into the room, his eyes darting from the buzzing clippers in Sarah's hand to the trembling child, and then to the pile of hair on the floor.

Emily: Daddy! Daddy!

Mark: What in God's name are you doing, Sarah?!

Sarah: Mark, let me explain! She got gum stuck deep into her hair, and it was a complete mess—

Mark: Shut up! Just shut your mouth!

Mark lunged forward, grabbing Sarah’s wrist with a grip so violent that the clipper slipped from her fingers and crashed onto the floor. His voice shook the walls of the venue, filled with an anger that Sarah had never seen in the four years they had been together.

Mark: Touch my things again and this wedding is over!

Sarah: Mark, you're hurting me! Release my arm!

Mark: You crazy woman! You ruined everything!

Mark stepped toward the vanity mirror, slamming his fist down onto the marble table with a loud crack. Makeup bottles, pearl necklaces, and champagne glasses shattered and tumbled to the floor. The bridesmaid in the corner screamed, pressing herself against the wall in horror.

Sarah: Mark, please! Look at me! It was an accident!

Mark: Wedding? What wedding!

Without another word, Mark grabbed Sarah’s left hand. With brutal force, he yanked the four-carat diamond engagement ring off her finger. The gold scraped against her knuckle, leaving a raw red mark. He slammed the ring down onto the white bedside table, right beside the hair clipper and the tufts of cut hair.

Sarah: Mark, stop! What are you doing?!

Mark: There is no wedding. Get out of my sight!

Sarah stared down at her naked ring finger, her breath coming in ragged, painful hitches. The shock turned into sharp panic as Mark snatched up Emily and stormed toward the door. Sarah gasped, backing away into the wall as her entire world dissolved into nightmare.

Sarah: Somebody call 911 right now! Call the police!
