FABLE

The Scene in the Mirror

The Broken Ring and the Forgotten Vow

The heavy bridal suit door slammed shut, echoing down the empty marble hallway like a gunshot. Sarah dropped to her knees right into the pile of fallen hair and shattered glass, her lace train soaking up the spilt champagne. Her hands shook so violently she couldn't press the numbers on her phone.

Jessica: Sarah! Oh my god, Sarah, are you okay? Don't touch the glass!

Sarah: He took the ring, Jess... He pulled it right off my finger. Look at my hand!

Jessica: I saw it. I saw everything. He went completely insane!

Sarah: He thought I was hurting Emily. He didn't even let me speak!

Jessica: He grabbed you! He bruised your arm, Sarah! Look at your skin!

Sarah looked down at her wrist. Red, inflamed handprints were already darkening into purple bruises against her fair skin. Her throat felt tight, as if she were drowning. Outside the door, the low hum of two hundred arriving guests drifted through the air vents.

Sarah: My parents are out there. My dad paid fifty thousand dollars for this venue!

Jessica: Forget the money! Did you see his eyes? That wasn't just anger, Sarah. That was hatred.

Sarah: He called me a crazy woman. He looked at me like I was garbage.

Jessica: Because he is a monster hiding behind a suit! You need to take that dress off right now.

Sarah: No... no, I have to go talk to him. It's a misunderstanding. Emily had industrial glue in her hair from the craft table! I was trying to save her from cutting all of it!

Jessica: He didn't ask! He didn't give you three seconds to explain! Is this how he reacts when something goes wrong?

Sarah stood up slowly, her knees wobbling. She looked at herself in the grand vanity mirror. Her mascara was smeared down her cheeks, her veil hung crooked, and her hand was swollen where the engagement ring had been ripped away. For months, everyone had told her how lucky she was to marry Mark Vance, the rising corporate lawyer, heir to Vance Logistics, the man who had everything.

Sarah: He threw the ring down like it meant nothing. Four years... four years of my life, Jess.

Jessica: He showed you who he really is before you signed that marriage license. Thank God for that.

Sarah: My father is waiting in the lobby with his heart condition. How do I tell him?

Jessica: We walk out there together. You don't hide, Sarah. He is the one who should be ashamed.

Sarah: Where is he? Where did Mark take Emily?

Jessica: He went down toward the VIP lounge where his mother and his lawyer are staying.

Sarah: His lawyer? Why would his lawyer be here twenty minutes before the wedding?

Jessica: I don't know, but I saw Arthur holding a thick yellow folder when I came in earlier.

Sarah froze. Arthur was not just Mark's personal attorney; he was the estate manager for the Vance family trust fund. Months ago, Mark had promised that after the wedding, they would sign the co-ownership papers for the estate her father had helped finance.

Sarah: He didn't bring Arthur for a wedding blessing. Something else is going on.

Jessica: What are you talking about?

Sarah: Hand me that robe. I'm not running away. I'm going to that lounge.
