Marcus: Tell me right now what is happening in this house, Sarah!
Sarah: Marcus, please calm down. Let me explain everything to you!
Marcus: Calm down? There is a child living inside our walls!
Lily: Daddy, don't yell at Mommy. Maya gets scared when people yell.
Marcus stared at his daughter, then looked back down at the narrow crawlspace door. The beam of light illuminated the trembling little girl inside, her small fingers clutching the edge of the worn quilt. She wore oversized clothes, her dark hair tangled and unbrushed.
Marcus: Her name is Maya?
Sarah: Marcus, please close the door first. Don't frighten her.
Marcus: Close the door? Are you in your right mind? She’s a human being!
Sarah: You don't understand the legal trouble we are in! You don't know what happened!
Marcus ignored his wife's desperate pleas and reached his arms into the crawlspace. The dusty air smelled of old wood, cotton, and faded baby powder. Maya shrank back into the corner, pulling the blanket higher up over her face.
Marcus: Hey sweetheart... I'm not going to hurt you. Come out here.
Maya: Mommy said I can't leave the room. The bad men will take us away.
Marcus: What bad men? What is she talking about, Sarah?
Sarah: Marcus, I did it to protect our family! To protect our house!
Marcus: Protect us by locking a child in a crawlspace for eight years?
Sarah burst into heavy tears, her hands covering her face as she sank onto the hallway carpet. Lily walked over to her sister's tiny access door and reached out her hand, holding Maya's small fingers in her own.
Lily: It's okay, Maya. Daddy is nice. He makes good pancakes on Sundays.
Maya: Can I come out, Mommy?
Sarah: No, Maya! Stay inside! Marcus, don't pull her out!
Marcus: Get out of my way, Sarah!
Marcus gently wrapped his arms around Maya’s small frame and pulled her through the low wooden frame. She was shockingly light, her bones sharp against his hands. As soon as her feet touched the hallway floor, she shielded her eyes from the ceiling light, whimpering quietly.
Marcus: Look at her, Sarah! Look at what you've done!
Sarah: You think I wanted this? You were in a coma eight years ago!
Marcus: What does my coma have to do with hiding our daughter?
Sarah: Everything! The hospital bills, the debt collectors, the court orders... everything!
Marcus stood up, holding Maya tightly against his chest. His heart raced as he looked at his wife, who was hyperventilating on the floor. The family home in Dallas had always felt warm and peaceful, but now the walls felt like they were closing in on him.
Marcus: I am calling 911 right now.
Sarah: If you call the police, they will lock me up and take both girls away!
Marcus: Then start talking right now before I dial the number.
