Sarah: Eight years ago, when you had that terrible car accident, you were in the ICU for three months.
Marcus: I know when my accident was. I woke up and you told me our second twin didn't make it.
Sarah: Because that’s what the doctor told me at first! They said Maya had severe brain trauma!
Marcus: So why is she standing right here in front of me?
Sarah: Because she survived! But the hospital made a massive medical error during delivery!
Marcus pulled a chair out from the hallway nook and sat down, keeping Maya on his lap. Lily sat on the floor nearby, softly stroking her twin sister's hand. Maya stared in fascination at the hallway light fixture, as if seeing an alien world.
Marcus: What kind of medical error?
Sarah: They gave me the wrong medication during labor. It caused severe oxygen deprivation to Maya.
Marcus: That’s malpractice, Sarah! You hire a lawyer, you sue the hospital! You don't hide the baby!
Sarah: The hospital administrator offered a massive out-of-court settlement! Three million dollars cash!
Marcus stared at Sarah in absolute disbelief. The room went silent, except for the low hum of the Dallas heat outside.
Marcus: Three million dollars?
Sarah: Yes! They said if I signed the non-disclosure agreement and signed Maya's death certificate, they would pay for all your medical bills and give us the cash.
Marcus: You signed a death certificate for a living child?
Sarah: You were dying, Marcus! The doctors said your life support was going to be turned off because our insurance refused to cover the ICU stay!
Marcus: So you traded our daughter’s life for my medical bills?
Sarah: I didn't trade her! I brought her home! The hospital recorded her as deceased, so legally she doesn't exist!
Marcus: You hid her so the hospital wouldn't find out you kept the money and the baby!
Sarah covered her face, her shoulders shaking violently as tears streamed through her fingers.
Sarah: I meant to keep her hidden just until the legal statute of limitations passed! But then time kept moving, and I got terrified!
Marcus: Where did the three million dollars go, Sarah?
Sarah: It paid off this house! It paid off your medical debt! It paid for everything we have!
Marcus: I live in a house bought with my daughter's stolen life?
Maya: Mommy, is Daddy mad at me?
Marcus: No, baby. Daddy is not mad at you. Daddy is so sorry... so, so sorry.
Marcus pulled Maya closer, pressing his face into her hair. Tears filled his eyes as he looked over at Lily, who was holding the dusty old black-and-white hospital photograph.
Lily: Daddy, is Maya coming to school with me now?
Marcus: Yes, Lily. She is never going back inside that wall again.
Sarah: Marcus, if the police find out, I will go to prison for fraud and child endangerment!
Marcus: You should go to prison! You kept our daughter in the dark for eight years!
