Sarah: You can't just hand me over to the police! What happens to Lily and Maya if I go to prison?
Marcus: I will take care of my daughters. The right way this time.
Sarah: You think you can handle this alone? The trust fund money is tied up in a private account under my name!
Marcus: I don't care about the dirty money, Sarah!
Sarah: You have to care! If that money is frozen by the court, we lose the house, the insurance, everything!
Marcus stood up, placing Maya gently on the sofa in the living room. He walked over to the attic pull-down ladder near the hallway ceiling and tugged the rope down hard.
Sarah: What are you doing? Why are you going up there?
Marcus: Where are the hospital papers? Where is the agreement you signed?
Sarah: Don't go up there, Marcus! Please!
Marcus: Show me the papers, Sarah, or I call the sheriff right now!
Sarah lowered her head, defeat washing over her face. She slowly walked toward the attic ladder and pointed toward a metal fireproof safe tucked behind the insulation boxes.
Sarah: The code is Lily’s birthday. The settlement agreement is inside the blue folder.
Marcus climbed the wooden rungs, his flashlight beam cutting through the dusty attic air. He pulled the heavy metal box out from behind the pink fiberglass insulation and carried it down to the hallway table.
Marcus: Punch in the code.
Sarah’s hands trembled as she typed the digits into the keypad. The electronic lock clicked, and the heavy door opened with a soft hiss. Inside lay stacks of legal documents, bank statements, and a thick blue folder marked with a prominent red stamp.
Marcus: "Confidential Settlement & Release of Liability - Dallas Memorial Hospital."
Sarah: Read the names on the last page, Marcus.
Marcus opened the folder and flipped quickly to the final signature block. His eyes widened as he read the name printed next to the hospital representative’s line.
Marcus: Dr. Arthur Vance?
Sarah: Yes. The head of pediatrics back then.
Marcus: Arthur Vance is my current employer! He hired me at the medical equipment firm three years ago!
Sarah: Why do you think he gave you that high-paying manager position without an interview?
Marcus dropped the folder onto the carpet, his chest tightening as the full horror of the web hit him. His job, his house, his wife, and his daughter's secret life were all linked to the exact same man.
Marcus: He didn't hire me because of my resume... He hired me to keep you quiet and keep me under his thumb!
Sarah: He threatened me, Marcus! He said if I ever brought Maya out, he would destroy your career and put me in prison for life!
