Three months later, the morning sun shone brightly into the kitchen of a spacious suburban house just outside Dallas. The counters were cluttered with baby bottles, toddler toys, and legal folders.
Marcus stood at the island, stirring a pan of pancakes while keeping an eye on baby Emma, who was giggling in her high chair. Lily sat at the table, neatly coloring in a storybook.
Lily: Daddy, look! I drew our house! This is you, this is me, this is Emma, and this is Mommy in the sky.
Marcus: That is beautiful, Lily. Your mother would be so proud of you.
The front doorbell rang, breaking the peaceful morning atmosphere. Marcus wiped his hands on a dish towel and walked to the front door, pulling it open.
Standing on the porch was David, his head legal counsel and longtime friend, holding a thick briefcase and a broad grin.
David: Morning, Marcus. Hope I'm not interrupting breakfast.
Marcus: Never. Come on in. What did the judge say about the Sterling lawsuit?
David: It's settled. Mr. Sterling's firm agreed to a full out-of-court settlement. They paid thirty million dollars into a trust fund for Lily and Emma to avoid a public trial regarding the illegal custody intimidation and fraud charges.
Marcus: And Victoria?
David: She tried to countersue for public defamation, but the judge threw it out within five minutes. The video of you walking out of the wedding got over twenty million views online. Her reputation in Dallas is completely shot.
Marcus let out a slow, heavy breath, feeling the last weight of his past life melt away from his shoulders.
Marcus: I don't care about the money or their reputation, David. I just wanted my girls to be protected.
David: They are protected. Full legal custody is officially yours, signed and sealed by the state of Texas.
Marcus looked back toward the kitchen, where Lily was feeding a small piece of pancake to baby Emma, making the infant erupt in soft, adorable laughter.
Marcus: Thank you, David. For everything.
David: Don't thank me, Marcus. You made the right choice the second you dropped that boutonnieres on the floor.
