Hours passed inside the sterile white waiting room of the city hospital as fluorescent lights hummed above.
Arthur sat in a vinyl chair, staring angrily at Mark who paced back and forth near the door.
A police officer walked into the waiting area holding a black clipboard and a small recording device.
Officer: Are you Mark Davis, the husband of Sarah Davis?
Mark: Yes, I am. How is my wife doing, officer?
Officer: The doctor is with her now. We need to discuss what happened.
Arthur: He pushed her during an argument over family money.
Mark: Dad, please! It was an absolute accident!
Officer: We received a report about domestic violence at your home address.
Mark dropped his head, feeling the weight of his terrible actions crashing down on his shoulders.
Before he could speak, the doctor stepped through the double doors wearing blue surgical scrubs.
Doctor: Family of Sarah Davis? She has regained consciousness.
Mark: Can I see her? Please, I need to apologize!
Doctor: She is awake, but she specifically asked to speak with the police first.
Mark froze as the officer nodded calmly and stepped past him into the intensive care corridor.
Arthur: You made your bed, Mark. Now you have to lie in it.
Mark: I was just trying to protect our family business assets!
Arthur: You were protecting your own greed, and you know it.
Fifteen minutes later, the police officer walked back into the waiting room with a cold expression.
Officer: Mark Davis, you are under arrest for domestic assault and reckless endangerment.
Mark: Wait! Sarah knows I didn't mean to hurt her!
Officer: She gave us a full statement about the mortgage fraud and the assault.
