Tearing Down the White Wall

The Little Girl Hiding Behind the Luxury Hallway Wall

Mark: Emily, step behind me right now!

Emily: Daddy, don't hurt her! She’s nice, she just wanted some water!

Victoria: Mark, this is insane! That is an old ventilation duct. It leads nowhere except the crawlspace and the furnace room!

Mark: Someone is trapped inside our home, Victoria!

Mark drove his bare fist straight into the sheetrock above the baseboard. The white drywall cracked with a violent crunch, spitting gypsum dust across the gleaming oak floor.

Victoria: Stop! You're destroying the wall!

Mark: I don't care about the damn wall!

He clawed at the fractured plasterboard, ripping away jagged chunks with his bleeding knuckles. Wood splinters tore into his hands, but adrenaline drowned out the pain.

A sudden, sharp scream came from inside the dark framing.

Mark: Hey! Don't be afraid! I am not going to hurt you, sweetheart!

He yanked away another massive slab of insulation and drywall. Through the hole, nestled in the cold, narrow cavity between two wall studs, crouched a little girl.

She wore a filthy, torn beige dress. Her bare legs were covered in yellow bruises, and her tangled blonde hair hung over a face smudged with dark soot.

Mark: It's okay. Look at me. You're safe now.

Unknown Child: Please... don't lock the grate again. Please.

Mark: Nobody is locking anything. Here, take my hand.

The girl shrank backward against the exterior brickwork, her tiny chest heaving as tears cut clean lines down her dirt-caked cheeks.

Victoria: Whose child is that? How could a street kid get past our security gate and inside the walls?

Mark: Shut up, Victoria! Help me pull her out!

Victoria: Don't touch her! We don't know where she came from or what diseases she might have! Call the police immediately!

Emily: Mommy, she’s freezing! Look at her feet!

Mark ignored his wife completely. He reached deep into the narrow wall cavity, extending his open palms.

Mark: I promise you, nobody will ever hurt you again. Come here, little one.

The trembling girl stared at Mark's open hands. Her brown eyes were wide with total panic, but she saw the tears gathering in Mark’s eyes.

Slowly, hesitantly, she reached out her tiny hand and placed it gently on Mark's cheek.

Unknown Child: You have the same green eyes as the picture.

Mark: What picture?

Victoria: Mark, pull her out before she faints! Look at her lips, they are turning blue!

Mark carefully hooked his arms under the frail girl's shoulders and lifted her out of the ruined wall into the warm light of the mansion hallway.

She weighed almost nothing. She collapsed against his navy suit jacket, shivering uncontrollably as she clutched a tiny silver object in her fist.

Mark: Get blankets, Victoria! Right now! Call Dr. Harrison and tell him to get over here immediately!

Victoria: I am calling 911, Mark. This is a police matter, not a family matter.

Mark: Just get the damn blankets!

Emily ran toward the linen closet, while Mark wrapped his own suit jacket around the shivering girl's tiny frame.

As the girl rested her head on his shoulder, her fingers uncurled. A small silver locket dropped into Mark's open palm—a locket he had purchased with his own money eight years ago.
