The front door bell echoed through the foyer below. Victoria froze, her face turning pale white.
Victoria: That's the dinner committee. Mark, please... think about what people will say.
Mark: Let them talk.
Mark carried Lily down the wide mahogany stairs, wrapping the cashmere blanket tightly around her frail shoulders. Emily ran into the foyer from the kitchen, holding a warm bowl of soup.
Emily: Daddy, is she going to be okay?
Mark: She is going to be just fine, sweetheart. Emily, I want you to meet your big sister, Lily.
Emily’s eyes widened, a bright smile spreading across her face.
Emily: A real sister? Not an imaginary one?
Lily: I'm real. I liked the bread you gave me.
Emily: I have strawberry jam in the kitchen! We can eat it together!
Mark opened the front doors. Standing on the porch were two uniformed county police officers alongside Dr. Harrison, who Mark had secretly texted minutes earlier from the upstairs landing.
Officer Miller: Mr. Vance? We received your emergency domestic distress alert.
Mark: Thank you for coming so quickly, Officer Miller. Please arrest that woman standing on the staircase for child kidnapping, false imprisonment, and conspiracy to tamper with custody records.
Victoria rushed down the stairs, screaming in frantic defense.
Victoria: Officer, do not listen to him! This is a private family dispute! My father is a senior partner at the firm that represents your commissioner!
Officer Miller: Ma'am, keep your hands where we can see them. Step down off the stairs immediately.
The second officer stepped forward, producing a pair of steel handcuffs. Within moments, Victoria was being escorted out the front doors into the flashing red and blue lights of the cruiser.
Dr. Harrison gently knelt before Mark and Lily, pulling a stethoscope from his medical bag.
Dr. Harrison: She’s severely dehydrated and malnourished, Mark, but her pulse is steady. We should get her to Stamford Hospital for a complete evaluation right away.
Mark: I'm coming with her. Emily, go grab your coat.
Emily: Can I hold Lily’s hand in the car, Daddy?
Mark: You can hold her hand as long as you want.
Lily looked up at Mark, her small fingers still clutching the tarnished silver locket against her chest.
Lily: Are you really my daddy?
Tears blurred Mark's vision as he pulled both of his daughters into a tight, warm embrace in the middle of the quiet foyer.
Mark: Yes, Lily. I am your daddy. And you are finally home.
