The wardrobe looked completely ordinary from the outside. Inside were empty shelves and a few old boxes.
Daniel moved the boxes aside and knocked against the wooden back panel.
His expression suddenly changed.
Daniel: “This doesn't sound solid.”
Claire stepped forward.
Claire: “Daniel, don't.”
Daniel: “Why shouldn't I?”
He pulled at the panel, but it would not move.
Emma watched from behind her mother.
Emma: “That's where I heard the knocking.”
Daniel looked at Claire again.
Daniel: “You knew about this?”
Claire lowered her eyes.
Claire: “I knew there was something strange about that wall.”
Daniel: “And you never told me?”
Claire: “Because I was afraid of what we might find.”
Daniel grabbed a heavy tool from the nearby storage room and returned to the wardrobe.
Claire: “Daniel, please listen to me first.”
Daniel: “I've listened to everyone except my own daughter.”
He struck the weakened panel.
A piece of wood broke away.
Behind it was a narrow hidden space inside the wall.
Daniel leaned closer and looked inside.
His face went completely pale.
Daniel: “What is this?”
Claire covered her mouth.
Emma stepped forward.
Emma: “Daddy, I told you someone was there.”
Daniel reached inside and pulled out an old locked metal box.
For the first time, Claire began to cry.
