Julian stared at the heavy gold piece in his open hand, completely ignoring the whispering crowd behind him.
Vanessa: Julian, drop that dirty piece of trash right now and stand back up!
Julian: Where did you get this, son? Tell me right now.
Leo: My mom gave it to me before the big crash five years ago.
Vanessa: He's lying! Julian, someone looted the crash site and sold it to a pawn shop downtown!
Julian: Nobody looted anything. This locket was hand-carved in solid gold for my grandfather in nineteen fifty-two.
Vanessa: You're losing your mind in front of four hundred guests! Look at the board members watching us!
Julian: There are only two in existence. One sits inside my bank safe in Dallas.
Leo: And Mom put the other one around my neck so I would never forget who I was.
Vanessa: He is an impostor coached by your competitors to sink our business merger!
Julian: Shut up, Vanessa. Just shut your mouth.
Vanessa: Excuse me?! How dare you speak to me like that at our own altar!
Julian pressed his thumb against the worn side notch of the pendant.
The gold cover snapped open, revealing a tiny, water-damaged picture of Claire smiling in a field of sunflowers.
Scratched inside the lid were tiny cursive words etched with a needle.
Julian: For our brave little Leo. Forever your Claire.
Julian's vision blurred as a hot tear hit the gold surface.
Julian: Claire's private handwriting... only she and I ever saw this message.
Leo: She told me to run into the trees when the bad man came with the crowbar.
Vanessa: Julian, please! This is an extortion setup! Call the police to drag him away to juvenile hall!
Julian: What is your name, son? Tell me your full name.
Leo: Leo. Leo Sterling. Mom always called me her little bear.
A loud gasp rose from the front row where Claire's elderly aunt sat clutching her chest.
Julian: Only Claire called him that. She never once said that name in front of the press.
Vanessa: Anyone could guess a baby nickname! Julian, stand up and finish our vows right now!
Leo: She knows my name, Dad. She came to the cellar two weeks ago.
Julian slowly looked up from the boy, his jaw tightening into cold stone.
Julian: What cellar, Leo?
Leo: The dark room under the barn near Waco. She had that big diamond on her thumb and smelled like sweet lavender.
Vanessa: I have never set foot in a barn in my life! You dirty little liar!
Leo: You gave Mr. Henderson a thick yellow envelope and told him to make sure I disappeared forever!
Julian: Thomas Henderson? The private investigator I paid three million dollars to search for my family?
Leo: Yes! He kept me locked up and told me you threw me away because I was bad!
Julian stood up slowly, towering over the blonde woman in her pure white dress.
Vanessa: Julian, don't look at me like that! You know how unstable private investigators are!
Julian: Turn your head, Leo. Let me see.
Julian gently pushed back the boy's dusty hair, exposing a small red mark shaped like a leaf behind his left ear.
Julian: My mother had this exact birthmark. My boy was born with it.
Vanessa: It's a coincidence! A sick, twisted coincidence!
Julian: You stole my child!
Julian's hand swung forward with explosive fury, cracking hard across Vanessa's cheek.
The bride shrieked as the blow knocked her flat onto the marble floor, her diamond tiara snapping in two.
Vanessa scrambled backward on her elbows in pure terror, raising both hands defensively with wide eyes.
Vanessa: Wait, please! Let me explain!
Julian: There is nothing to explain!
Julian grabbed her bare arm with an iron grip, dragging her across the floor toward the grand exit doors.
Julian: You are going straight to federal prison!
