Julian stared down at Vanessa, the veins in his neck bulging with suppressed rage.
Julian: What did you do to Claire's car, Vanessa? Tell me right now.
Vanessa: Nothing! It was a rainstorm! The state troopers ruled it an accidental hydroplane crash five years ago!
Julian: The accident report said the brakes suffered sudden hydraulic failure. But that car was inspected two days before.
Leo: Mom kept stomping the pedal, Dad. She kept crying that the pedal went all the way to the floor and nothing worked.
Julian looked down at his crying son, his heart breaking into tiny pieces as he remembered that terrible night.
Julian: Thomas Henderson was a master auto mechanic before I hired him to run my security team, wasn't he?
Vanessa: I don't know his resume! My father hired him ten years ago for our company fleet!
Richard: Julian, you are making reckless criminal accusations without a single shred of actual proof!
Marcus: It's not without proof, Mr. Vance. My phone just rang from the Dallas district attorney's office.
Marcus held up his smartphone, putting the call on speaker so the entire room could hear the conversation.
Detective Ross: Mr. Sterling? Can you hear me?
Julian: I hear you, Detective Ross. You are on speaker in front of four hundred witnesses.
Detective Ross: We just arrested Thomas Henderson at the bus depot in Waco. He was trying to board a coach to El Paso with fifty thousand in cash.
Vanessa let out a small, terrified whimper, falling back against the mahogany pew with wide eyes.
Julian: What did Henderson say, Detective?
Detective Ross: He cracked the minute we cuffed him. He signed a full confession to avoid capital murder charges. He stated Vanessa Vance paid him sixty thousand dollars to slice the hydraulic brake line on Claire Sterling’s car.
Claire's elderly aunt began weeping loudly, supported by two relatives in the second row.
Vanessa: He’s lying! He’s trying to pin his own sick crimes on me to save his own skin!
Detective Ross: Henderson gave us the location of his workshop safe. We just found the original text messages from Vanessa Vance giving the order, along with timestamped photos of the cut brake lines.
Julian closed his eyes for three agonizing seconds, a single hot tear sliding down his cheek.
Julian: Claire didn't lose control in the rain. You murdered my wife in cold blood.
Vanessa: She took everything that was supposed to be mine! You were mine first in college!
Julian: I never loved you, Vanessa! Not in college, and certainly not now!
Vanessa: I gave you five years of my life! I stayed by your side when you were completely broken!
Julian: You broke me on purpose so you could step over her body and take her place in my house!
Leo: Dad... my shoulder hurts really bad where she shoved me down onto the floor...
Julian turned his back on Vanessa, dropping to his knees to pull Leo tight against his chest.
Julian: I’ve got you, Leo. Daddy’s right here. You’re never going back to that dark room again, do you hear me?
Leo: Are we going home, Dad? To the big house with the oak tree in the yard?
Julian: Yes, son. We are going home right now.
The loud scream of police sirens shook the heavy stained-glass windows of the grand ballroom.
Flashing red and blue lights illuminated the pristine white walls as four squad cars screeched to a halt outside.
