The polished white marble floor of the grand Dallas venue reflected the crystal chandeliers, but the heavy double doors flew open with a deafening slam that cut through the music.
Five hundred wealthy guests turned in unison toward the center aisle as a panting, barefoot ten-year-old boy in filthy clothes sprinted toward the altar under the bright daylight.
Boy: Stop the wedding! She is lying about everything!
The boy fell to his knees on the slick stone just ten feet short of the raised stage, clutching his chest as he wheezed for air.
Vanessa: What is that disgusting creature doing inside my ceremony?!
Julian: Wait, Vanessa. The kid looks like he ran five miles through traffic.
Vanessa: I don't care if he ran across the ocean! He is ruining the most important day of our lives!
Boy: Please, mister! Look at her eyes! She’s not who you think she is!
The blonde bride gathered her heavy silk train with an icy snarl, storming down the marble steps toward the gasping child.
Vanessa: Silence, you filthy street urchin!
Before the pastor could say a word, Vanessa swung her open hand and delivered a hard, vicious slap across the boy's cheek.
The loud crack echoed against the pristine walls, freezing the entire room in shocked silence.
Vanessa: Get out of my sight!
She planted both manicured hands firmly against his narrow chest and shoved him hard onto the marble floor.
The boy’s head hit the stone with a dull thud as muffled cries and gasps rippled across the pews.
Julian: Get away from him! What are you doing?!
Julian broke away from the best man, pushing past the frozen bridesmaids and dropping straight to his knees on the hard floor.
He pulled the trembling, bruised boy into his arms, lifting him protectively against his sharp black tuxedo jacket.
Boy: Don't let her take me back, mister... please don't let her take me back!
Julian: Nobody is touching you. Look at me, son. Are you hurt?
The boy looked directly into Julian’s eyes, his lower lip quivering as he raised his closed right fist into the bright light.
Boy: I am your lost son! She paid to keep me hidden!
He unfolded his dirty fingers, revealing a heavy, scratched gold locket dangling from a broken chain.
Julian’s heart stopped, his breathing freezing in his chest as he stared at the object in front of him.
