Elena: Mr. Vance, please... I need this job. I have to support my mother's medical bills.
Arthur: You misunderstand me, Elena. You are not being dismissed.
Elena: I'm not?
Arthur: I want you to step into the role of estate director and Leo's head guardian.
Leo: Can Elena stay with us every day, Dad? Please?
Arthur: She will, Leo. If she accepts the offer.
Elena: Mr. Vance, I don't have a college degree in estate management.
Arthur: You have something no degree can buy. You protected my son when no one else cared.
Jonathan: The salary for estate manager is triple your current wage, Elena. Plus full family medical benefits.
Elena wiped a stray tear from her cheek with the corner of her apron.
Elena: I... I don't know what to say, sir. That would pay off my mother's surgery completely.
Arthur: Consider it done. The clinic invoice will be cleared by morning.
Leo: Does that mean the mean lady is never coming back?
Arthur: Never, Leo. The locks are already being changed right now.
Outside in the driveway, the flashing red and blue lights illuminated the grand windows as the cruiser drove away.
The remaining banquet guests quietly filed out into the parking courtyard, talking in hushed tones.
Jonathan: The district attorney just messaged me, Arthur. Victoria's bail hearing is set for Monday.
Arthur: Ensure no bail reduction is granted. She remains in county lockup until trial.
Jonathan: Understood. The evidence against her is open-and-shut.
Leo set his empty mug down on the counter and reached out toward his father's coat.
Arthur lifted his son into his arms and held him tight, feeling the small heartbeat settle into calm.
Arthur: You're safe now, Leo. Daddy has you, and no one will ever lock you away again.
Leo: Can Elena read me a bedtime story tonight?
Elena: I'd love to, Leo. We can read the one about the brave knight in the tower.
Leo: You're the knight, Elena. You broke the wall open.
Elena smiled softly, unhooking her uniform badge and laying it on the clean countertop.
The great mansion was quiet at last, free from cold pride and filled with real warmth.
Arthur looked at Elena and his sleeping boy, knowing that family was built by love, not paper titles.
