Daniel held Leo tightly against his chest, feeling the boy’s heart hammering like a trapped bird inside his thin ribs.
Daniel: "Look at me, buddy. Are you hurt? Did she hurt your arm?"
Leo: "My elbow hurts, Dad... but you have to go to the wall. Grandpa is inside. He was pounding on the metal."
Victoria: "Daniel, do not listen to him. He is having another one of his dramatic episodes."
Daniel slowly stood up to his full height, his broad shoulders squared, towering over his wife.
Daniel: "A dramatic episode? You just threw my eight-year-old child onto marble stone with your bare hands."
Victoria: "He tripped over his own shoelaces! He ran into me and threw a tantrum because I told him screen time was over."
Leo: "That is a lie! You told Grandpa that nobody cared about him anymore!"
Victoria: "Shut up, Leo! Daniel, your father had an episode earlier today. He became completely disoriented."
Daniel looked between his sobbing son and his pristine wife, whose flawless makeup could not hide the twitching nerve near her eye.
Daniel: "Where is my father, Victoria?"
Victoria: "He is resting in his guest wing upstairs. I gave him his blood pressure medication and tucked him into bed an hour ago."
Leo: "She is lying! She made him walk down the hallway to the reinforced room! She said he had to look at old papers!"
Victoria: "Daniel, please. Arthur has been slipping for months. You know the neurologist warned us about early dementia."
Daniel: "My father's mind is as sharp as a razor, Victoria. He reviewed our family business quarterly reports yesterday."
Victoria: "Old people have good days and bad days! Why are you interrogating me like a criminal in my own home?"
Daniel did not answer. He turned on his heel and walked straight past the grand staircase toward the reinforced hallway behind the library.
Victoria: "Daniel, stop! Where do you think you are going?"
Daniel: "I am going to check the estate vault."
Victoria: "There is nothing in there except your family trust documents and gold bullion! Why would you humiliate me by checking a storage locker?"
Daniel: "Because my son is trembling, and you look like you are about to pass out."
Daniel rounded the corner, his heavy leather dress shoes echoing loudly against the polished hardwood of the private gallery corridor.
At the end of the long gallery stood the heavy bank-grade steel security door, built into the foundation fifty years ago by Daniel's grandfather.
The massive multi-spoke wheel lock was turned completely clockwise, seated firmly in its heavy locked position.
Daniel: "Arthur? Dad, are you in there?"
Silence hung heavy in the air for two unbearable seconds.
Then, from deep behind five inches of reinforced steel, came a muffled, hollow scraping sound, followed by a weak thud.
Arthur: "Daniel... Daniel, please..."
Daniel’s blood turned to ice in his veins.
Daniel: "Dad! Hold on! I am opening the door right now!"
Daniel gripped the cold chrome spokes of the outer wheel, his knuckles turning white as he entered the mechanical combination code.
Victoria: "Daniel, wait! You don't understand what happened!"
Daniel ignored her frantic voice, hauling back on the heavy lever with all his strength until the steel locking bolts slid back with a massive metallic clank.
