The heavy vault door groaned on its oiled hinges, swinging open slowly into the brightly lit gallery.
Inside the windowless, freezing steel-lined room, seventy-four-year-old Arthur was curled up on the hard floor, clutching his wool sweater to his chest.
Daniel: "Dad! Oh God, Dad!"
Daniel dropped to his knees inside the vault, wrapping both arms around his father’s shivering body and lifting him out into the warm hallway light.
Arthur: "Daniel... air... I could barely pull a breath..."
Arthur’s lips were pale blue, his skin clammy and grey, his frail fingers digging desperately into his son's suit lapels.
Daniel: "Take deep breaths, Dad. I've got you. You're safe. You're out."
Leo ran over, throwing his arms around his grandfather's neck while crying openly.
Leo: "Grandpa! I told Dad, I told him you were inside!"
Arthur: "Brave boy... my good, brave little boy..."
Arthur raised a trembling hand, brushing back Leo's messy hair before his eyes locked onto Victoria standing frozen near the wall.
Arthur: "Daniel... she locked me in here. She pushed me in and spun the wheel."
Victoria stepped backward, her hands flying to her mouth, her voice rising in high-pitched hysteria.
Victoria: "Daniel, wait! He was losing his mind! He wandered into the vault looking for his old watch and locked it from the inside!"
Daniel: "Shut your mouth, Victoria! This vault door has an external deadlock! It cannot physically be locked from the inside!"
Victoria's jaw dropped, her face draining of whatever color was left.
Victoria: "I... I panicked! He was having an aggressive outburst, Daniel! He threatened me with a walking cane!"
Arthur: "I have never raised a hand against anyone in my entire life, you wicked creature."
Arthur struggled to sit upright against the wall, his breathing still shallow and ragged.
Arthur: "She brought me down here under false pretenses. She told me you had sent urgent legal papers regarding the family estate."
Daniel: "What papers, Dad? I never sent any documents home with her."
Arthur: "A power of attorney transfer. She wanted full control of the family trust and the deed to this house."
Victoria shook her head violently, her manicured fingers twisting her diamond wedding ring around her finger.
Victoria: "That is absurd! Why would I need a power of attorney? I am your wife, Daniel! We share everything!"
Daniel: "We share what is outlined in our prenuptial agreement, Victoria. And the trust fund belongs entirely to my father and Leo."
Victoria: "He is making it up because he has hated me since the day we got married! He wants to tear our family apart!"
Arthur: "Look inside her leather designer tote bag, son. Look inside her purse on the foyer console."
Victoria gasped, lunging forward as if to run toward the front hall, but Daniel rose like a stone wall, blocking her path entirely.
Daniel: "Don't move an inch."
Victoria: "Daniel, you have no right to touch my personal belongings! That is a violation of my privacy!"
Daniel: "You just attempted to suffocate my father in a cold storage room. Privacy is the last thing you need to worry about."
