Secrets Hidden Beneath the Floor

The Secret Hatch Inside the Billionaire's Mansion

The heavy iron doors echoed through the high-ceilinged foyer as the deadbolts clicked home. The soft music playing in the living room seemed eerie now, clashing violently with the sudden panic in the house. Lily shrank back against a velvet armchair, her small hands clutching her pink nightgown as she looked back and forth between her father and the dark opening in the floor.

Julian: Marcus, take Lily to her bedroom immediately and lock the door from the outside.

Marcus: Yes, Mr. Vance. Right away.

Lily: No! Daddy, let Mommy out! She's cold down there!

Julian: She is fine, Lily. Do not make me repeat myself.

Marcus: Come along, little miss. Let's go upstairs.

Lily: Let me go! Mommy! Mommy!

The guard lifted the crying girl and carried her quickly up the marble staircase, his heavy boots thudding against the steps until a door slammed shut down the upper hallway. Julian adjusted his cuffs, his breathing heavy as he stood alone over the hidden hatch. Down in the darkness, the sound of weeping continued, raw and terrified.

Julian: You should have stayed quiet down there, Elena.

Elena: She found me... my baby found me, Julian! How long did you think you could hide this?

Julian: Long enough to finish the paperwork for the estate transfer. You were supposed to remain missing until the court granted full control of your trust fund to me.

Elena: You are insane! You kept me locked in a hole while you pretended to mourn on national news!

Julian: It was very convincing, wasn't it? The media loved the grieving husband routine.

Julian walked over to his desk, picked up a heavy glass tumbler, and poured himself two fingers of scotch. He took a slow sip, staring down into the dark opening with total detachment.

Julian: Do you have any idea how much money was tied up in your father's business? Millions. And you were going to hand it over to a divorce lawyer.

Elena: Because you were stealing from the company! I found the offshore accounts!

Julian: And that was your fatal mistake. Curiosity always costs people like you.

Elena: Please... just let Lily go. Don't hurt her. Keep the money, take everything, just let her leave!

Julian: Nobody is leaving this house tonight. Not until I figure out how to clean up this mess.

He stepped closer to the hatch, his shadow falling over the narrow concrete stairs that led straight down into the damp cellar. A heavy iron padlock hung from the rim of the wood frame, its key sticking out of Julian's vest pocket.

Julian: You ruined a very clean plan, Elena.

Elena: You can't keep us here forever. People know I was missing. The police are still looking!

Julian: The police think you walked out on your family or got taken by a stranger miles away. They will never look inside a hidden bunker built during the Cold War under my private study.

Elena: You monster...

Julian reached down and grabbed the edge of the wood cover, preparing to slam it shut once again. But before the heavy hatch could fall, a sharp sound reverberated through the quiet mansion—the sound of an electronic security panel near the front door chiming loudly as an override code was entered from the outside.
