Arthur froze, his head turning slowly toward the floor beneath his leather shoes. The silence in the room became terrifyingly dense, broken only by the hum of the air conditioner.
Arthur: What... was that?
Julian: It was nothing. The pipes in this old house creak all the time.
Arthur: That wasn't a pipe, Julian. That sounded like a voice.
Elena: Arthur! Down here! It's Elena!
Arthur's eyes widened in horror. He took a quick step back, kneeling down on the rug and snatching the fabric away. The wooden hatch and its iron latch lay completely exposed.
Arthur: My God... Julian, what is this?
Julian: Don't touch that door, Arthur!
Arthur pulled the latch back and lifted the heavy hatch. The dim yellow light from the cellar spilled upward, illuminating the stairs and the pale, tear-streaked face of Elena sitting at the bottom.
Arthur: Elena?! Oh Jesus... Elena!
Elena: Arthur, please! Get me out of here! He locked me in three months ago!
Arthur: Three months?! You told everyone she walked out! You told the police she abandoned her daughter!
Julian: Shut the hatch, Arthur. Now.
Arthur stood up slowly, his hands trembling as he stared at his younger brother in utter disbelief and disgust.
Arthur: You kept your wife locked in a basement like an animal? Are you out of your mind?!
Julian: She found the offshore transfers! She was going to take half my wealth and put me in prison!
Arthur: So you kidnapped her?! This is life in prison, Julian! This is kidnapping and torture!
Julian: I did what I had to do to protect the family empire! To protect our legacy!
Arthur: Legacy?! You ruined everything! I am calling the police right now.
Arthur reached into his coat pocket and pulled out his cell phone, his fingers rapidly tapping the screen to dial 911. Julian's eyes turned dark and cold. In one swift movement, he reached behind his desk, grabbed a heavy bronze desk paperweight, and stepped forward.
Julian: Put the phone down, Arthur.
Arthur: Get away from me, Julian! I'm calling them!
Julian: I said put it down!
Julian lunged forward, striking Arthur across the side of the head with the bronze weight. Arthur let out a sharp cry, dropping his phone as he stumbled sideways against the bookshelves. Blood trickled down his temple as he slid to the floor, stunned and disoriented.
Elena: No! Julian, stop! Stop it!
Julian: You forced my hand, Arthur. You should have minded your own business.
Julian kicked the cell phone across the room, watching it slide under the heavy sofa. He picked up the heavy brass key to the cellar lock from his vest pocket, his breathing ragged and uneven. He was no longer just protecting his money—he was protecting his freedom.
