Marcus: Clara, talk to me right now! Whose hand is that?! What is behind this wall?!
Clara: Marcus, please! Step away from the door and grab Lily! We have to leave the house immediately!
Lily: Daddy, I'm scared! Who is inside the house?
Marcus: Nobody is going to hurt you, Lily. Stand behind me. Clara, I am not moving an inch until you explain what is happening in our home!
Clara covered her mouth, tears streaming down her face as the cold iron handle of the hidden steel door slowly began to turn with a screeching metallic groan. I gripped the wooden handle of the sledgehammer until my knuckles turned white, shielding my family while staring into the widening crack of dark shadow. The draft coming out of the open wall smelled of old dust, rust, and damp earth, filling our bright suburban living room with an eerie chill.
Marcus: Is someone living inside our walls? How long has this door been here?
Clara: It was built before we bought the estate, Marcus! My father... my father built this room thirty years ago before he passed away!
Marcus: Your father? The former state judge? Why would an honorable judge construct a concealed vault behind a living room armoire?
Clara: Because he wasn't just a judge, Marcus! He was keeping a secret that could destroy our family, our fortune, and put all of us in prison!
The steel door creaked fully open, swinging outward into the drywall dust. Out from the gloom stepped a tall, gaunt man dressed in tattered dark clothes, his skin pale and unwashed, his eyes blinking wildly against the bright daylight streaming through our windows. He looked at Clara, then at me, his hollow chest heaving as he took a shallow, raspy breath.
