Marcus: Sarah, what are you talking about? What do you mean I was never supposed to find it?
Sarah: Marcus, please, just listen to me! Step away from the wall right now!
Marcus: Step away? There is a steel door built inside our living room drywall, and someone just touched the handle from the inside! Who is in there?!
Sarah: I didn't know it was in this house, I swear! But I know what that symbol on the handle means!
I looked closer at the rusted steel handle. Etched deeply into the metal was a crest—a stylized crest of the Vance family, one of the wealthiest real estate empires in Texas. Sarah’s maiden name was Vance. My heart dropped into my stomach as the pieces began to collide in my head.
Marcus: Your family? Sarah, we bought this place six months ago after your estranged father passed away! You told me this was just a standard bank foreclosure listing!
Sarah: It was listed through a third-party trust! My father's estate managed hundreds of properties. I didn't know this specific house was part of his personal holding accounts!
Marcus: You lied to me about how we got the mortgage discount on this place!
Sarah: I was trying to protect us! My father was a dangerous man, Marcus. He didn't just build luxury high-rises. He built off-the-grid holding structures for private clients!
Lily started crying loudly, clinging tightly to Sarah’s maroon shirt. The metallic handle on the steel door turned slowly with a screeching, rusty whine. The deadbolt inside disengaged with a heavy mechanical clunk that echoed through the entire lower floor.
Marcus: Get Lily upstairs right now, Sarah! Lock the bedroom door!
Sarah: I’m not leaving you down here with whatever is behind that door!
Marcus: I have the hammer! Take our daughter and GO!
Sarah grabbed Lily into her arms, tears streaming down her face, and sprinted up the carpeted stairs. I stood in the middle of the living room, hands white-knuckling the wooden handle of the sledgehammer, my gaze locked on the slowly opening vault door.
Marcus: Who’s in there?! I am armed! Step out slowly!
The door swung open another inch, revealing pitch darkness inside. The smell that drifted out was thick, stale, and smelled of rust, old paper, and antiseptic. A faint, raspy voice coughed from the shadows inside the wall.
Mysterious Voice: Arthur...? Is that you, Arthur...?
Arthur Vance was Sarah’s late father. The man who had died four months ago in a private plane crash. My throat went completely dry as I took a step closer to the dark opening.
Marcus: Arthur Vance is dead. Who are you? How long have you been locked in there?
Mysterious Voice: Dead...? No... he said he’d be back with the key... He said the trust agreement was signed...
The door pushed open further, and a thin, frail man wearing torn, faded business attire stumbled into the light of my living room. He held a thick leather binder tightly against his chest like a shield. His face was gaunt, his eyes sunken and bloodshot, blinking frantically against the afternoon sunlight.
Marcus: Don't move! Who are you?!
Frail Man: My name is Richard Sterling... I am the chief executor of the Vance Family Living Trust... and if Arthur is dead... then this house doesn't belong to you. It belongs to the state government and the federal investigators who have been looking for me for five years.
I stared at the man in sheer horror. The name Richard Sterling had been all over the news five years ago—he was the whistle-blower attorney who had mysteriously vanished right before testifying in a massive multi-million dollar fraud case against Arthur Vance.
