The Loose Board

The Secret Hidden Under The Dallas Mansion Floorboards

David: Did you hear that? Tell me you heard that, Elena.

Elena: It sounded like... like someone tapping from underneath us.

Toby: Daddy, I'm scared. Who is down there?

David: Toby, go stand by the front entrance right now. Elena, help me move this console table out of the way.

Elena: Mr. Carter, should we call the police first? We don't know what's down there.

David: No, I need to see what this is right now. Hand me the crowbar!

David jammed the iron tool deeper into the gap, leveraging his entire body weight against the hardwood flooring. The planks groaned, popping free one by one to reveal a hidden cut-out in the subfloor—a secret wooden hatch that had been seamlessly crafted and concealed beneath the decorative hallway runner. David’s heart slammed against his ribs as he stared at the heavy iron latch holding the hatch shut from the outside.

Elena: Someone deliberately locked this from up here.

David: Stand back! I'm breaking the latch!

He slammed the back of the hammer against the padlocked latch until the rusted iron snapped. The heavy wooden door shuddered from below, pushing upward against the frame. David pulled the hatch fully open, revealing a pitch-black drop into an unmapped basement cavity that wasn't on any floor plan of the estate. A sudden, weak gasp floated up into the warm air of the hallway.

Voice from Below: Please... light... please help me...

David: Evelyn? Oh God, Evelyn, is that you?!

Evelyn: David? Oh God, David, you opened it... you finally opened it!

Elena: Merciful Lord! Someone is actually alive down there!

David dropped to his knees, reaching his arm deep into the square shadow of the floor. A pale, trembling hand reached up out of the darkness, grabbing his wrist with incredible, desperate strength. Her skin was freezing, her fingers covered in dust and dried grime, but the diamond ring on her ring finger sparkled under the foyer chandelier—the matching band to his own. David burst into tears as he pulled her upward toward the light.

David: Hold on to me! I’ve got you! I’ve got you!

Evelyn: Don't let go of me, David! Please don't let go!

Victoria: What on earth is all this noise in my house?!

David froze, his hands still tightly gripping his wife's arms as he turned his head toward the grand staircase. His mother, Victoria Carter, stood at the landing in her tailored gold sequined dress, her face frozen in pure, unadulterated horror.
