Victoria: David! What are you doing to the hardwood floors?! Put that tools away this instant!
David: Mother, look at the floor! Look who is down here!
Victoria: I... I don't know what you are talking about. It's just old plumbing access!
Elena: That is your daughter-in-law, Mrs. Carter! She's coming out of the floor!
Victoria: Silence, Elena! You are a paid maid, you do not speak to me like that in my own home!
Evelyn: She lied to you, David... she did this to me!
David pulled with all his strength, lifting Evelyn’s frail, exhausted body completely out of the dark pit and onto the cool marble of the foyer. Her clothes were torn, her hair matted, but her eyes burned with a furious, desperate fire as she collapsed against David’s chest. Toby ran over, weeping, while Elena wrapped her own sweater around Evelyn’s shivering shoulders.
David: Four years... Mother, you told me she ran away with her ex-boyfriend to New York! You showed me the goodbye letter!
Victoria: She did leave! She ran away! I don't know who this wild woman is, but Evelyn left town years ago! You know she was unstable, David!
Evelyn: I never left this house! I never stepped one foot outside this property!
Victoria: Don't listen to her, David! She's delusional! She's trying to ruin our family name!
David: Shut up, Mother! Just shut up!
Evelyn: The night before our wedding anniversary... she invited me into the wine cellar below the pantry. She said we needed to discuss the trust fund for Toby.
Victoria: That is a lie! A total fabrication!
Evelyn: She hit me over the head from behind... when I woke up, I was in total darkness. She locked the hatch, locked the iron doors, and brought me bread and water through a narrow laundry chute once a week just to keep me breathing!
David: You trapped my wife under my own feet while I raised my son in this house?!
Victoria: I did it for you, David! She was going to take half of your inheritance in the divorce! She was going to destroy the Carter family legacy!
