Officer Miller: Mrs. Vance, I’ve reviewed the footage. The intent to cause harm and stage an accident is abundantly clear on this recording. We’re taking her into custody immediately.
Clara: Thank you, Officer. Will we need to come down to the station to sign formal statements?
Officer Miller: Yes, ma'am. Whenever you're ready. The footage provided by your daughter is more than enough to file formal criminal charges for reckless endangerment and filing a false report.
Marcus: I'll make sure our family lawyer provides full cooperation and additional evidence from our home security backup drive.
Officer Miller: Good. We'll handle everything from here. Have a safe evening, folks.
As the police cruisers drove away into the evening darkness, an overwhelming silence fell across the massive living room. Marcus stood near the fireplace, staring blankly at the cold marble hearth, while Clara sat on the sofa softly rocking the baby to sleep.
Marcus: Clara... I don't expect you to forgive me today. Or even this month. But please tell me what I can do to fix this broken trust.
Clara: You need to understand why this happened in the first place, Marcus. It wasn't just about Veronica. It was about how easily you let your family make you feel like I'm an outsider in your world.
Marcus: That’s not true! I chose you! I built this life with you!
Clara: Then why did you instantly assume I was capable of doing something so evil? Why was your first instinct to scream at me instead of asking what happened?
Marcus: Because... because my cousin had been whispering in my ear for two days straight, telling me you were overwhelmed, that you weren't handling motherhood well, that you were snapping under pressure. She planted those doubts in my head, and I was stupid enough to listen.
Lily: She was trying to get you to sign over the estate power of attorney, Dad. I heard her talking to her divorce attorney on the balcony yesterday morning.
Marcus: What? Power of attorney?
Lily: She told her lawyer that if she could prove Mom was mentally unfit or dangerous, you would be so devastated that you’d hand over management of the family trust fund to her.
Clara: She almost succeeded, Marcus. If Lily hadn't checked the security app on her phone, you would have taken our baby away from me today, wouldn't you?
Marcus: I... I don't know what I would have done in that moment of panic. And that realization terrifies me more than anything else.
