Victoria: Clean my shoes, you filthy dog!
Victoria Vance, wearing a sparkling evening gown, raised a thick leather strap high into the air. Her face was contorted in deep anger as she glared at the young maid kneeling on the marble floor.
Lily: Please, Mrs. Vance! I didn't mean to spill it!
Victoria: You lazy brat! You ruined my custom dress!
Victoria swung the leather strap down with full force toward the terrified girl. Just before it struck her shoulder, a strong arm cut through the air and grabbed Victoria's wrist mid-flight.
Victoria: Let go of me! She attacked me first!
Ethan: That is enough, Victoria.
Ethan Vance, dressed in a sharp black suit, gripped her wrist firmly until she dropped the heavy strap onto the floor. He turned away from the furious woman and knelt on the polished floor beside the weeping girl.
Ethan: Are you alright? Did you do what she said?
Lily: No, I swear I didn't! I was just cleaning the tray!
Ethan reached down to help her up, but as her white uniform collar shifted, a flash of silver caught the bright chandelier light. A silver coin locket pendant rested against her neck.

Ethan: Where did you get this?!
Lily: It... it belonged to my mother before she passed away.
Ethan lifted the coin pendant with his tattooed hand, his chest heaving as a heavy silence fell over the crowded room.
