The Secret Behind the Scissors

The Stepmother Cut Her Hair Before the Wedding

Vanessa stared at Mark in sheer horror, her expensive makeup ruined by sudden tears of humiliation. She touched her swollen cheek, trembling as she realized Mark was completely serious. There was no going back.

Vanessa: You... you hit me! You actually put your hands on me!

Mark: I protected my daughter from a wicked abuser. Get your belongings and leave my home before I call my head of security and have you formally arrested for child endangerment.

Vanessa: You'll regret this, Mark! My father will pull every single penny from your investment firm by tomorrow morning! You’ll be ruined!

Mark: I would rather lose every dollar in my bank account than let you near my daughter for one more second. Get out!

Vanessa wiped her face angrily, turned on her high heels, and stormed out of the bathroom, her heavy footsteps fading down the long hallway before the front door slammed shut with a deafening bang.

The penthouse fell instantly quiet. Mark let out a long, ragged breath, resting his head against the wall for a second before turning to face Elena and his daughter. His hands were shaking as he knelt down on the marble floor right in front of them.

Mark: Lily... baby, look at daddy.

Lily slowly turned her face toward him, her tiny nose red and her little body still shuddering from the trauma. Mark wrapped his big arms around both his daughter and Elena, pulling them into a tight, desperate embrace.

Mark: I am so sorry... I am so, so sorry I let that woman near you, sweetie.

Elena: She was jealous of her, Mr. Sterling. It wasn't about lice, and it wasn't about the wedding style.

Mark pulled back slightly, looking up into Elena’s eyes with deep confusion and exhaustion.

Mark: What do you mean, Elena? Why would a grown woman target a two-year-old child's hair?

Elena: I overheard her on the phone yesterday afternoon in the kitchen. She thought I was out at the grocery store.

Mark: What did she say? Who was she talking to?

Elena: She was talking to her mother. She said that every time she looked at Lily, she saw your late wife, Clara. She said Lily’s curls were the only thing keeping Clara’s memory alive in this house, and she needed to erase her completely before signing the prenuptial agreement.

Mark’s eyes widened as the painful truth hit him like a physical blow. He reached out and gently touched the back of Lily’s small, bare head, tears welling up in his own eyes.

Mark: Clara’s mother died of cancer right after Lily was born... those curls were identical to her mother's. She deliberately destroyed the last physical connection my daughter had to her mom.

Elena: She also mentioned something else, Mr. Sterling. Something about your family estate and the late Mrs. Sterling's trust fund.

Mark: What trust fund? Clara left everything directly to Lily in a legal will before she passed away.

Elena: Vanessa told her mother that once you two were legally married, she was going to petition the court for full legal guardianship of Lily so she could take control of the fifteen million dollar inheritance.

Mark stood up slowly, his face hardening into absolute stone as the full scope of Vanessa’s evil scheme finally became clear.

Mark: She didn't just want to replace Clara... she wanted to steal my daughter's entire future and lock her away in a boarding school.

Elena: She was planning to ship her away to Europe as soon as the honeymoon was over.

Mark: Not anymore. Elena, take Lily to her room, pack a small bag for her, and get her some fresh juice. I need to make a phone call to my corporate lawyer immediately.
