The Lawyer's Urgent Call

The Stepmother Cut Her Hair Before the Wedding

Ten minutes later, Mark was standing in his home office, staring out the floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking downtown Dallas. He held his phone tightly against his ear, his pulse racing as the call connected.

Arthur: Mark? What's going on? I was just going over the final draft of your prenuptial agreement for the Friday ceremony.

Mark: Tear it up, Arthur. Tear up the prenup, cancel the wedding caterers, and call the security team for the Sterling Building.

Arthur: What? Mark, are you insane? The wedding is in two days! Your father-in-law's firm just signed the fifty-million-dollar merger paperwork this morning!

Mark: I don't care about the merger! Vanessa just assaulted Lily in my home!

There was a long, heavy pause on the other end of the line. Arthur, who had been the Sterling family’s trusted legal counsel for over twenty years, lowered his voice instantly.

Arthur: What did she do, Mark? Is Lily okay?

Mark: She held my baby down in a chair and shaved her head bare with electric clippers while she screamed for help! She tried to fire my house maid for intervening!

Arthur: Good God... Mark, tell me you have evidence. Tell me someone saw this happen.

Mark: My maid Elena witnessed the whole thing and saved Lily. I walked in right as it was finishing. I caught Vanessa holding the clippers with her hands covered in my daughter's hair.

Arthur: Listen to me very carefully, Mark. Do not touch anything in that bathroom. Do not sweep up the hair, do not wash the clippers, and do not clean the shattered glass from your wedding ring.

Mark: Why? What are you planning to do?

Arthur: We are filing a formal police report for child cruelty, and I am filing an emergency restraining order against Vanessa and her family within the hour.

Mark: What about her father’s company? He threatened to pull all his capital and freeze our trust accounts.

Arthur: Let him try! He doesn't know that I audited his firm's tax filings last week during the merger due diligence. His company is broke, Mark! He was using Vanessa’s marriage to you to cover up a thirty-million-dollar fraud scheme!

Mark took a deep breath, clutching the edge of his mahogany desk as the pieces of the grand puzzle finally snapped together.

Mark: They were targeting Lily’s inheritance from Clara’s estate to pay off their corporate debts...

Arthur: Exactly. Vanessa was rushing this wedding because her father's bank accounts are about to be frozen by the federal government. She needed legal custody of Lily to siphon money from her trust fund before the end of the month!

Mark: How fast can you get a judge to sign the emergency restraining order?

Arthur: I am calling Judge Miller right now. I will be at your penthouse with two police officers in thirty minutes. Make sure Elena is ready to give an official written statement.

Mark: She will be ready. Arthur... thank you.

Arthur: Don't thank me yet, Mark. Protect your daughter. I'm on my way.

Mark hung up the phone and walked slowly back into the living room. Elena was sitting on the plush sofa, gently holding Lily in her lap while singing a quiet lullaby. Lily had finally stopped crying, resting her tiny bald head against Elena’s chest, holding tight to a small stuffed bunny.

Mark: Elena... I can never repay you for what you did today. You stood up to a powerful woman to protect my child when I wasn't here.

Elena: You don't owe me anything, Mr. Sterling. Lily is an innocent sweet baby. I couldn't just stand there and let her be hurt.

Mark: You saved her life today, and you saved my family from financial ruin. Starting right now, your salary is doubled, and I am giving you a permanent role as Lily’s private nanny if you will accept it.

Elena’s eyes filled with tears as she looked up at Mark, nodding her head softly.

Elena: I would be honored, Mr. Sterling. I love this little girl like my own family.
