FABLE

A Heartless Push Above

The Stepmother Thought the Balcony Was Empty

Vanessa: Hand her to me, Evelyn. I want to hold my stepdaughter near the view.

Evelyn: No, Vanessa. Stand back from the edge. It isn't safe up here.

Vanessa: I said give her to me!

Vanessa reached out angrily, snatching the baby from Evelyn’s fragile arms. Lily began to cry instantly, her tiny hands reaching back toward her grandmother. Vanessa walked right up to the stone railing overlooking the interior open foyer six floors below. The drop was immense, framed by decorative columns and a hard marble floor at the base.

Evelyn: Vanessa, please! Step away from the ledge!

Vanessa: You think you can control this house, old woman? You think Mark will always listen to you?

Evelyn: Please, just set her down in her crib!

Vanessa: Mark’s entire estate, his life insurance policy, his entire trust fund... it all comes to me if there are no other heirs. Did you ever think about that?

Evelyn: What are you saying? You're crazy!

Vanessa: Oops... she slipped.

With a cruel, deliberate shove, Vanessa pushed the little baby over the sixth-floor railing. A horrific gasp tore from Evelyn’s throat as Lily fell through the open air. Time seemed to freeze. Vanessa stood back with a smirk, convinced that her twisted plan to inherit the family fortune had succeeded in a single split second.

Evelyn: NO! MY BABY!

Evelyn didn't hesitate. Driven by pure instinct and explosive maternal fear, the elderly woman bolted down the corridor toward the interior grand staircase. Her worn shoes slapped against the tile as she sprinted faster than she ever had in her life. Below, in the ground floor foyer, safety netting from recent ceiling restoration work was hanging near the lower landing, but Lily was falling straight toward the stone floor.

Evelyn: I've got you! I've got you, sweetie!

Evelyn dove across the ground floor foyer, extending her arms completely. Miraculously, her hands caught the bundle just inches above the hard marble. The impact knocked Evelyn to the floor, scraping her knees and wrists, but she held Lily tightly against her chest. The baby burst into loud, panicked screams, alive and unharmed.

Evelyn: Thank God... thank God! You're safe, my sweet girl.

From the top landing, Vanessa peered down, her eyes widening in absolute horror and disbelief. She hadn't expected the old woman to move so fast. Her face twisted into rage as she hurried down the stairs to confront Evelyn before anyone else could witness what had just happened.

Vanessa: You stupid old fool! Give her back!

Evelyn: Get away from us! You tried to kill her!

Vanessa: Shut your mouth! Nobody will ever believe a senile old hag like you!
