The Stepmother's Secret On The Marble Stairs

The polished marble grand staircase of the suburban Dallas mansion shimmered under the crystal chandelier, but the air inside was thick with sudden, suffocating panic.

Elena: Oh my God! The baby!

Clara: I've got her! I've got her!

The metal stroller clattered wildly against the marble edges, picking up lethal momentum as it tumbled straight toward the foyer floor. Clara dropped the silver tray she was holding, the heavy tray crashing against the tiles with a deafening metallic echo. She threw her body across the polished floor, skidding on her knees, her arms reaching out in pure instinct. A split second before the stroller could tip completely over and crush the child, Clara caught the front wheels with both hands, halting the deadly descent.

Clara: Shh, sweetie, it’s okay. You’re safe. I’m right here.

Before Clara could even catch her breath or check the child for injuries, the massive double front doors burst open. Mark Miller stepped into the grand foyer, his leather briefcase dropping from his hand as his eyes locked onto the scene.

Mark: What the hell is going on here?!

Elena: Mark! Thank God you're home! Look at what she did!

Mark rushed across the polished hall, his face pale with sudden fury. Without asking a single question or checking the stroller himself, he grabbed Clara by the shoulder, yanked her up, and delivered a harsh slap across her face. The force sent Clara tumbling onto the cold marble, her palm pressing against the tile as tears instantly filled her eyes.

Mark: YOU LET MY BABY ROLL?! ARE YOU CRAZY?!

Clara: SIR, I CAUGHT HER! I caught her before she fell! Please, listen to me!

Elena: She’s lying, Mark! She was careless! She let go of the handle while standing at the top!

Lily: PAPA STOP! MOMMY PUSHED ME!

Mark froze, his raised hand stopping dead in mid-air as he looked down into the stroller. His two-year-old daughter, Lily, was sobbing hysterically, pointing her small, trembling finger up toward the grand staircase. Mark’s chest heaved as he turned his gaze slowly toward the stairs, where a single red high-heeled sandal lay sideways on the third step, right where Elena had been standing just moments ago.
