The Handcuffs Fall

The Stepmother's Secret On The Marble Stairs

The loud wail of police sirens echoed down the long driveway, growing louder until bright red and blue lights flashed through the tall glass windows of the grand entrance.

Elena: Mark, please! Tell them it was an accident! I'll sign the divorce papers today! I'll give up all claims to the house and estate!

Mark: You don't have a choice anymore, Elena. The prenup already stripped you of everything the moment you committed a felony against my family.

Elena: I have nothing without you! My family will be disgraced!

Mark: You should have thought about that before you tried to kill my daughter for an insurance payout.

The double front doors opened, and three uniformed officers stepped into the grand foyer, their boots clicking against the marble tile.

Officer Davis: Mr. Mark Miller? We received a call regarding a child endangerment incident.

Mark: Officer, thank you for arriving so quickly. My wife, Elena Miller, deliberately pushed my two-year-old daughter down the stairs in her stroller. I have the entire incident captured on our security camera in high definition.

Officer Davis: Ma'am, stand up slowly and keep your hands where we can see them.

Elena: This is a misunderstanding! It was a domestic argument! He struck the maid, not me!

Mark: I hit Clara because Elena falsely claimed Clara let the stroller roll! I was reacting in horror, but the footage clearly shows Elena pushed it while Clara risked her life to catch it!

Officer Davis: Ma'am, do not make this harder on yourself. Turn around.

Elena stood up slowly, her face red with anger and embarrassment. Tears smeared her expensive mascara as the officer pulled her hands behind her back and snapped the steel handcuffs around her wrists.

Elena: Mark! You'll regret this! My father's lawyers will destroy you in court!

Mark: Let them try. Your father's firm won't touch a child abuse case with video evidence. Goodbye, Elena.

The officers escorted Elena out the grand doors. She struggled against their grip, her barefoot dragging on the doorstep as she screamed profanities into the quiet suburban evening.
