Arthur Vance walked into the room with crisp, deliberate steps, his gray hair sharply styled, followed by three federal agents in tailored dark suits.
Clara: Arthur? What is the meaning of this outrageous interruption? This is a private family rehearsal!
Arthur: Forgive the intrusion, Clara. But as the senior executor of the late Charles Sterling's estate, I have a legal obligation to present emergency evidence to this board.
Marcus stepped forward quickly, putting himself between Arthur and the dining table.
Marcus: Vance, you are completely out of order! Get out before I have private security drag you out into the parking lot!
Arthur: You might want to look at the corridor behind me, Marcus. The men outside aren't private club security. They are federal agents from the Department of Justice Financial Crimes Task Force.
A sharp gasp swept through the dining table.
Judge Henderson pushed his heavy chair back, his face turning pale.
Judge Henderson: Arthur, what on earth are you talking about? Financial crimes?
Arthur: Judge Henderson, for the last four months, Clara Sterling and Marcus Hayes have run an elaborate embezzlement scheme designed to strip Elena Sterling of her rightful inheritance.
Clara: That is filthy slander! I am Charles's lawful widow! I gave up my life to care for that man!
Arthur opened his leather briefcase, pulled out a thick stack of certified bank records, and slammed them down directly in the center of the table.
Arthur: Here are the certified wire statements. Three offshore shell accounts registered in Belize and the Cayman Islands under the company name Apex Holdings.
Marcus: Those are routine tax mitigation entities! Every major corporation uses offshore accounts for asset protection!
Elena: Really, Marcus? Then why did forty million dollars transfer into Apex Holdings directly from my father's personal liquid trust fund three days after his funeral?
Marcus looked down at Elena, the color draining from his face until his lips looked blue.
Marcus: Elena... that was... that was an emergency liquidity reserve requested by the corporate treasury department...
Elena: Stop lying. I stood outside that door and heard you laughing about my trust fund while you slipped my stolen phone into your pocket.
Clara stood up so violently her chair scraped across the hardwood floor with a deafening screech.
Clara: You spied on us? You deceitful, ungrateful little wretch!
Elena: I’m ungrateful? You married an ailing man, waited for him to fall ill, and started looting his life's work before his body was even in the ground!
Clara: I loved Charles!
Arthur: If you loved him, Clara, why did you wire three hundred thousand dollars to Dr. Robert Evans one week before Charles suffered his fatal heart failure?
The entire dining hall plunged into absolute, horrified silence.
Even the waitstaff near the service bar stood frozen, clutching silver trays to their chests.
Judge Henderson: Arthur... are you accusing Clara of murder?
Arthur: Dr. Evans was taken into federal custody two hours ago. He has signed a full written confession detailing how Clara paid him to switch Charles's heart medication with lethal blood thinners.
Clara’s hands began to shake uncontrollably, her manicured fingers clawing at the pearls on her neck.
Clara: He’s lying! Evans is a disgraced doctor trying to save his own license!
Marcus: Wait! Hold on! Time out! I didn't know anything about any medication! I swear on my mother's life, I had no part in that!
Elena turned her cold gaze toward the man she had loved for two years, watching him disintegrate into a frantic mess.
Elena: Look at you, Marcus. Throwing your partner to the sharks the second the lights turn on.
Marcus: Elena, please! Listen to me! Clara came to me! She told me you were drowning in debt! She said the company was going bankrupt and we needed the Chicago sale to save the estate!
Elena: By taking my phone? By forging my signature on prenuptial agreements? By stealing forty million dollars?
Marcus backed into the wine cart, knocking over a crystal bottle that shattered on the floor, sending dark red wine pooling across the white carpet like blood.
Marcus: I was trying to save us, Elena! You have to believe me!
Elena: I believed you for two years, Marcus. That was the biggest mistake of my life.
