The Stripping of Assets

The Wife's Unexpected Arrival

Clara: Attention, everyone. I apologize for the disruption to your evening.

Guest 3: Clara, we had no idea what he was doing behind your back!

Clara: Most people didn't. But tonight, the party is officially over.

Guest 4: What happens to the company now?

Clara: My legal team will take over operations starting at midnight. Every employee, contractor, and client will be protected.

Clara turned to the catering staff and security detail, giving clear, firm instructions as the bewildered guests began gathering their coats and departing in small, whispering groups. Chloë was sitting on a velvet sofa near the entrance, sobbing hysterically into her hands as her father arrived at the front doors surrounded by his own lawyers.

Chloë's Father: What on earth happened here?! Chloë, why are you in handcuffs?

Detective: She is being held briefly for questioning regarding accomplice liability, sir.

Chloë's Father: Clara! Is this your doing? You destroyed my family's reputation in one night!

Clara: Your daughter helped my husband attempt to steal my life and my estate, Marcus. You should be glad I don't sue your firm into bankruptcy as well.

Chloë's Father: You wouldn't dare. We have business ties across the state!

Clara: Had business ties, Marcus. My board terminated all contracts with your firm twenty minutes ago.

Marcus stood stunned, looking at the ice-cold determination in Clara's face before turning away to speak frantically to his legal counsel. The grandeur of the event had completely dissolved into a crime scene, with forensic accountants arriving to secure Julian's private office upstairs.

Lawyer: Mrs. Vance—or rather, Ms. Clara—all preliminary asset freeze documents have been processed by the state court.

Clara: Excellent. What about the trust fund accounts?

Lawyer: Completely restored to your sole ownership as of five minutes ago.

Clara: And his private accounts?

Lawyer: Seized to pay back the offshore loans he took against your personal stock portfolio.

Clara bent down and picked up her mother's diamond ring from the floor, wiping it gently with a silk napkin before placing it safely inside her clutch. She looked at the empty ballroom, taking a deep, long breath as the noise of police sirens faded into the distance outside.

Lawyer: Are you going to be okay, Clara?

Clara: I've never been better. The dead weight has finally been removed.
