The bright late afternoon light streamed through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the suburban home, illuminating the polished hardwood floors. Little Leo stood in the center of the living room, wearing his favorite olive green shirt. His mother, Elena, walked through the front door, carrying heavy brown paper shopping bags along with her leather purse. She looked exhausted after a long day of running errands across town.
On the couch sat Mark, comfortable in his relaxed clothes, watching television. He barely looked up as Elena stepped inside. But tiny Leo immediately turned, pointing his small hand straight toward his father.
Leo: PAPA!
Elena paused near the hallway, setting the heavy bags down on a side table to catch her breath.
Leo: TU!
Mark: YO?
Elena: What is he talking about, Mark? Why is he pointing at you like that?
Mark quickly scrambled off the sofa, putting on a big smile as he hurried toward Elena to grab her shopping bags and purse.
Mark: SI! Let me get those for you, honey. You must be exhausted after all that shopping.
Elena walked over to the couch and sank deep into the cushions, letting out a long sigh. Mark carried her purse and shopping bags over, placing them neatly right beside her on the couch cushion.
Leo: MAMA, AQUI!
Mark reached into Elena's purse, his fingers wrapping around her small zippered pouch to check the grocery receipts. But Leo instantly marched forward, his little face turning completely serious as he pointed a stern finger at Mark.
Leo: NO! DEBA!
Mark: SI, JEFE!
Mark held his hands up in defeat, retreating a step while Leo grinned mischievously and ran over to hug Elena's knees. Elena chuckled at her son's fierce protectiveness, but as her fingers brushed the inside pocket of her purse, she felt a thick paper document that she had never placed there herself. Attached to it was a folded note signed by a divorce lawyer, outlining a hidden bank account and a trust fund transfer that Mark had been quietly processing without her knowledge.
