Secrets on the Desk

Toddler Pointed a Finger and Exposed His Secrets

Elena stood up from the couch, clutching the document tightly against her chest. She pushed past Mark and walked straight toward his home office at the end of the hallway.

Mark: Hey! Stay out of my office, Elena!

Elena: If you have nothing to hide, why are you chasing me down the hall?

Mark: Because those are confidential financial records for my client accounts!

Elena shoved the office door open. The room was clutter-free except for a locked black briefcase resting beside a pile of unopened mail on the mahogany desk.

Elena: Where is the key to this briefcase, Mark?

Mark: I'm not opening that for you. You're behaving like a lunatic right now.

Elena: Open it, or I call the police right now and report a stolen family trust asset.

Mark: You wouldn't dare bring the law into our house over a minor misunderstanding.

Elena: Try me. I watched my dad build his estate from nothing, and I won't let you tear it apart.

Mark reached into his pocket with trembling hands and pulled out a small silver key, unlocking the brass clasps of the briefcase with a loud click.

Mark: Fine! Look all you want! See if there's anything illegal in there!

Elena flipped the lid open. Inside were stacks of bank statements, property deeds, and a prenuptial modification agreement that bore a forged signature of her name.

Elena: My signature... you forged my name on a post-nup agreement?

Mark: It was necessary to secure the loan for the new property investment in the city!

Elena: You forged my signature on a legal document to mortgage our house?

Mark: It's an investment property! It's going to triple in value by next year!

Elena: You put our child's home on the line without my knowledge?

Mark: I was going to pay it back before you ever noticed!

Elena: You are a fraud, Mark. A complete fraud.

Mark: I did what I had to do because you refuse to take financial risks that could make us rich!

Elena: Rich? We had everything we needed! We had a honest life, or so I thought!

Mark: Honest doesn't pay the mortgage on a six-bedroom house in this neighborhood!

Elena: I never asked for a six-bedroom house! You wanted the status, not me!

Leo: MAMA... NO LLORES...

Elena looked down to see little Leo standing at the doorway, tears welling up in his big brown eyes as he held his favorite stuffed bear.

Elena: I'm okay, baby. Mommy is okay. Come here.

Mark: Look what you're doing to him, Elena. You're terrifying our son over simple paperwork.

Elena: Don't you dare blame this on me! You ruined this family the moment you signed my name!
