The Paper inside the Purse

Toddler Pointed a Finger and Exposed His Secrets

Elena pulled the thick, folded document out from the side pocket of her leather bag. Her hands started trembling as her eyes scanned the top header printed in formal navy blue ink.

Elena: Mark... what is this?

Mark: What is what, babe? It's just receipts from the hardware store.

Elena: This isn't a receipt. This has a law firm's letterhead on it.

Mark froze near the kitchen counter. His relaxed smile vanished, replaced by a sudden pale tightness around his jaw.

Mark: Give that to me, Elena. You shouldn't be digging through my private stuff.

Elena: Private stuff? This is a legal notice for a trust fund liquidation. Why is my late father's estate listed here?

Leo: PAPA NO!

Elena: Hush, sweetheart. Go play with your blocks in the corner for a minute.

Mark: Elena, sit down and let me explain before you jump to crazy conclusions.

Elena: Don't tell me to sit down! You've been meeting with a divorce lawyer behind my back?

Mark: It was just a consultation! I was trying to protect our family assets!

Elena: Protect them from whom? From me?

Mark: The market is volatile, Elena! Your father left you that inheritance money, and you don't even know how to manage a basic checking account.

Elena: My father left that trust fund for Leo's future, not for you to move into a private account under your name only!

Mark: I was going to tell you this weekend after I finalized the tax structure with the attorney.

Elena: You lied to me this morning. You said you were at the office all day!

Mark: I had to meet the lawyer downtown! If I told you, you would have panicked just like you're doing right now.

Elena: You transferred fifty thousand dollars yesterday afternoon, Mark! I saw the banking alert on the home tablet!

Mark: That was a temporary deposit for the preliminary retainer fees and legal filings!

Elena: Retainer fees for a divorce proceeding? Is that what our marriage is to you? A business deal to strip away my family's money?

Mark: You're twisting everything! I did it for us!

Elena: You did it for yourself! Leo saw you slipping this envelope into my bag when I walked in, didn't he?

Leo: PAPA MALA!

Mark: The kid doesn't know what he's talking about, Elena. He's two years old!

Elena: He knows enough to point the finger at a thief in his own house!

Mark: Watch your mouth, Elena! I am your husband!

Elena: A husband doesn't secretly hire a lawyer to seize an inheritance meant for his son!
