Tragedy in the Woods

Trapped in the Woods When the Only Path Collapsed

Mark adjusted his heavy leather backpack straps as he walked along the smooth paved trail. Sunlight filtered softly through the dense green leaves above them, casting bright golden patches along the winding path through the country park.

Elena: I am so glad we took this weekend getaway away from the city.

Mark: You really needed a break after all those exhausting hours at your law firm.

Elena: That massive court trial drained every single bit of my energy this month.

Mark: Well, today is just for us and this beautiful scenic forest.

Elena laughed happily, grabbing Mark’s hand as they twirled gracefully near a hardwood oak bench. Her white summer dress fluttered around her legs while birds sang sweetly in the warm morning air.

Elena: This is the best day ever.

Mark: I promised you an unforgettable trip, didn't I?

They kept walking hand in hand, admiring the pristine wilderness stretching out across the peaceful valley. Everything felt quiet, far removed from the stressful noise of city traffic and complex financial cases.

Elena: Did you pack the emergency radio from our car trunk?

Mark: I left it in our rental car by the main entrance gate.

Elena: We probably will not need it anyway on such a clear morning.

Without warning, a sharp drop in temperature made Elena shiver slightly under her light dress. She glanced up at the blue sky and noticed heavy dark storm clouds rapidly gathering directly over the mountain peak.

Mark: Look at those dark clouds forming over the eastern ridge.

Elena: That looks like a sudden summer thunderstorm building up fast.

Mark: The sky was completely clear just ten minutes ago.

Dry leaves began swirling violently across the paved path as the cold wind picked up speed dramatically. A framed USA flag painted on a distant park shelter wall rattled loudly against the rustic wooden frame.

Elena: The wind is getting extremely strong out here.

Mark: A storm is coming, let's run!

A sudden deafening thunderclap echoed through the deep valley, shaking the ground beneath their running shoes. Heavy raindrops started falling fast, slapping hard against the broad oak leaves and soaking their hair within seconds.

Elena: I can barely see the trail ahead through this blinding downpour!

Mark: Hold my hand tightly and keep moving forward!

They sprinted frantically down the slick wet pavement toward a small rustic park cabin nestled among giant pine trees. Rain splashed high around their ankles as thunder crashed directly overhead again.

Mark: Up the steps! Move into the shelter right now!

Mark yanked the heavy wooden cabin door open, shoving Elena inside before rushing in himself. He slammed the sturdy door shut against the howling gale, cutting off the deafening sound of roaring wind.

Elena: My phone has no cellular reception inside these thick woods.

Mark: Mine has no signal either out here in this deep mountain gap.

Water dripped steadily from their wet clothes onto the rough timber floor as they sank down together against the wall. The dim cabin was lit only by flashes of bright lightning passing through the small glass window.

Elena: It is freezing in here, and the rain sounds terrible on the roof.

Mark: We have to wait until morning before we try walking back.

Elena: What if the storm damages the main road to our car?

Mark: The park rangers will clear any debris by tomorrow morning.

Elena rested her cold head on Mark’s broad shoulder while the torrential rain continued pounding relentlessly against the wooden roof. Outside, massive trees groaned ominously under the crushing weight of the fierce gale.

Elena: I have a strange, uneasy feeling about staying here tonight.

Mark: We are safe and dry indoors, Elena. Just try to get some rest.

She closed her eyes nervously, listening to the relentless assault of the tempest outside. The rustic cabin shook slightly every time a powerful gust of wind slammed against the heavy log walls, leaving them trapped in near pitch darkness.

Elena: Promise me we will leave the moment daylight breaks.

Mark: I promise. As soon as the sun rises, we head straight for the main road.

They sat close together in the freezing dark, unaware of the devastating collapse occurring along the mountain ridge just a few hundred yards away.
