The second morning broke with a pale, foggy mist clinging heavily to the tall pine trees surrounding the cabin. Mark stood up stiffly, his sore muscles aching from sleeping on the hard timber floor for two straight nights.
Mark: Elena, wake up. We need to prepare for our climb up the pile right now.
Elena: My head hurts so badly from severe dehydration and lack of food today.
Mark: Drink the very last drop of water from this flask before we move out.
Elena took the small metal flask, drinking the final mouthful of warm water before wiping her dry cracked lips. She stood up slowly, leaning against the wooden wall until her sudden dizzy spell passed away.
Elena: I am ready. Let us go face those fallen trees one last time.
They stepped out into the chilly morning fog, walking slowly toward the massive wall of crushed timber and rock. The ruined trail looked even more treacherous in the pale morning light than it had yesterday morning.
Mark: I will climb up first and test each heavy log before you step on it.
Elena: Please be extremely careful, Mark. One wrong step could break your leg out here.
Mark reached out to grab a heavy pine branch, preparing to pull his body upward onto the pile. Suddenly, a faint, rhythmic chopping sound echoed through the valley from far off in the distance.
Elena: Wait! Mark, stop moving! Did you hear that faint sound just now?
Mark: It sounds like a mechanical engine running somewhere beyond the ridge!
Elena: That is a chainsaw! Someone is cutting through the fallen trees out there!
Hope surged through their veins like an electric shock as they turned toward the northern trail barricade. Mark ran forward as close as he could get to the massive log pile, shouting at the top of his lungs.
Mark: Help! We are trapped over here near the park cabin! Help us!
Elena: Over here! Please hear us! We are stuck in the cabin valley!
The distant noise of the chainsaw suddenly stopped, followed by a long, agonizing pause of complete silence. Mark held his breath, praying with every cell in his body that their frantic shouts had been heard.
Ranger: Is anyone over there? Shout again if you can hear my voice!
Elena: Yes! We are here! Two people are trapped near the wooden shelter!
Mark: The path is completely blocked by massive fallen pine trees on our side!
Ranger: Stay back from the debris pile! We have a rescue crew clearing a path!
Tears of immense relief streamed down Elena’s dusty face as she fell into Mark’s open arms. They hugged each other tightly, laughing and crying together as the loud roar of heavy machinery filled the valley.
Elena: They found us, Mark! We are finally going to go home safely!
Mark: I told you we would make it through this nightmare safely, Elena.
For the next hour, they watched anxiously as park rangers and rescue workers cut away the massive pine logs. Heavy yellow machinery pushed crushed timber aside, slowly creating a wide, safe opening through the barricade.
Ranger: Step through slowly! Watch your footing on those loose pine branches!
Mark: Thank you so much! We have been trapped here for two whole days!
Ranger: The motel clerk reported your missing rental car late last night, folks.
As they walked through the cleared path toward the waiting ambulance, Mark looked back one last time at the cabin. The terrible nightmare in the woods was finally over, but they would never forget those woods.
Elena: I never want to see another pine tree for as long as I live.
Mark: Neither do I, Elena. Let us get you some food and go straight home.
They boarded the emergency vehicle, eager to put the dark, terrifying valley behind them forever.
