Selena: Mark! Thank God you came to your senses! I knew you were just stressed out from the wedding planning!
Selena rushed through the heavy oak doors, her white bridal gown dragging along the marble entryway, slightly smudged with dirt from standing outside.
Mark: Sit down, Selena. Let’s talk like adults.
Selena: I knew you’d realize how absurd you were being. A slap across my face? In front of your mother? I could sue you for domestic assault, Mark!
Mark: You could. But you won't. Because you want the prenuptial agreement signed before sunset, don't you?
Selena: Well, of course! The caterers are waiting, three hundred wealthy guests are sitting in the courtyard, and my reputation is on the line!
Mark: Let’s talk about reputations, Selena. Or better yet, let's talk about Richard Vance.
Selena’s smile instantly froze. She took a step back, her blue eyes narrowing in suspicion.
Selena: Richard? What does Sarah's old law partner have to do with our wedding day?
Mark: I was cleaning out the attic earlier today. I found a hidden metal box behind the north wall framing.
Selena: The attic? Why were you digging around in the attic on our wedding morning?
Mark: Because fate has a funny way of making sure justice gets served, Selena. I found Sarah’s real corporate files.
Selena: That's absurd. Sarah's files were audited two years ago by the state board. Everything was settled!
Mark: Not everything. For example, I found a recording of a phone call from July 14th, two years ago.
Selena’s breath hitched in her throat. She tried to maintain her calm composure, but a visible tremor started in her left hand.
Selena: I don't know what kind of sick game you're playing, Mark, but I won't stand here and be accused of nonsense!
Mark: You told Richard that once you married me, you’d liquidate the family trust fund and transfer the foreign assets to an offshore account in Belize.
Selena: That’s a lie! Someone forged that! You can’t prove anything with an old tape recorder!
Mark: I don't have to prove it to you, Selena. I just had to prove it to the federal agents standing right outside that doorway.
The heavy parlor doors swung open. Two tall men in dark suits stepped into the room, followed by Detective Miller of the State Homicide Division.
Detective Miller: Selena Vance—formerly Selena Wright—you are under arrest for conspiracy to commit grand larceny, insurance fraud, and first-degree murder in the death of Sarah Vance.
Selena: What?! Get your hands off me! Mark, tell them to stop! You love me!
Mark: I never loved you, Selena. I loved the fake woman you pretended to be. But most of all, I love my daughter.
Selena: You ruined everything! You stupid, pathetic idiot! I was supposed to own this entire estate by midnight!
Detective Miller: You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law.
Selena kicked and screamed as the steel handcuffs snapped around her wrists, her pristine white gown bunching up as the officers escorted her toward the police cruiser waiting outside.
